Review

Where the Dark Stands Still by A.B. Poranek, is a lush old world fantasy based polish folklore.

Liska Radost has a secret, that she struggles to keep hidden from the other villagers of Stodoła. She can do magic, and has exceptional healing magical abilities. She wants nothing more that to be excepted, and considered a normal person. So she suppresses her magic and now it’s become explosive, and wild.

Her only chance of removing her gifts that she sees as curse, is to venture in the spirit wood known as the Driada. She goes there seeking out a fern flower that will grant her a wish. Hoping to remove all traces of her magic she takes a deadly chance as she enters the Dark Wood that is known for its creatures.

The Demon Warden of the woods, is a shape shifter, an antlered white stag immortal, named The Leszy. After making a bargain with the Demon, Liska is to serve him for one year, and at the end her wish will be granted. One year to live in his sentient old manor under the Rowan Tree. Where things are not as one wound expect for a Demon’s house, full of dark secrets.

Innovative world building and incisive character development, made for a compulsory book. Readers will find themselves in love with the the three dimensional characters, who’s growth was exceptional.

A.B. Poranek delivers quite a phenomenal, atmospheric, fantasy tale. An impressive magical system, with nightmarish creatures along with an old God, that is even more monstrous. The slow burn romance was depicted in such away that kept flipping the pages. Liska Radost was such a enjoyable character, her struggles and growth was extremely written well. So far she is my favorite character of 2024. The manor and its inhabitants, made me want find my own dark wood manor house and live out the last of my days there. The ending was everything and gave the tale so much depth and emotion.

This is one author that needs to be on your radar.

Nothing short of a Five Star’s rating on this book 📖

REVIEW

From The Desk Of Gwendalyn

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

A Winter by the Sea By Julie Klassen second installment in her charming On Devonshire Shores Series

Julie Klassen continues her delightful story of the Summers sisters along with their mother, who have Sidmouth a beautiful seaside town located in East Devon. Their reduction in funds has motivated them to open Sea View, a guest house for borders.

Set during the winter of 1819, which should have been a slower time, sees a surprise guest to the community of Sidmouth. England’s Prince Edward, his wife, and daughter Victoria arrive and have taken up residence at Woolbrook Cottage. Some of Dukes party of are lodging at Sea View. One in particular is the Duke’s private secretary, James Thomson. Mr. Thomson is captivated by Emily Summers, who literally dreams to become a notable writer seems to be at a standstill. Also to Emily’s confusion Charles Parker has returned, adding a proper love triangle. The two other boarders at Sea View that have accompanied the duke, are Antoine Bernardi the Prince’s Pastry Chief and the royal Keeper of The Plate, Selwyn During.

The Summer Sisters family Saga is such a rewarding reading experience. I treasured my time returning to Sidmouth shores and charming Sea View guest house.

Julie Klassen has written another richly detailed historical fiction, along with characters I have come to love and care about. The storyline involves Emily with Sarah as a tie in. Emily is so far my favorite Summer Sister, and I completely invested in her life, but I also was there for Sarah’s part. The royal family and future-Queen Victoria added so much to book. I am excited to read future books in this warm hearted and completely engaging book series.

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

An Unsuitable Heiress by Jane Dunn delights readers once again with a Regency period historical fiction. Set right after The Battle of Waterloo, 1815, the book follows a resilient heroine, illegitimate Corinna Ormesby. Corinna lost touch with her father after the death of her mother. When her cousin promotes a monotonous marriage

she takes things into her own hands. She cleverly disguise herself in a young gentleman’s clothing, and heads to London to seek her father out. In route she meets three dashing men, who take her under their wing and show her all the delights and sounds that are usually only reserved for wealthy men of London.

Jane Dunn delivers a vividly descriptive, interesting, and well-written read here with characters and a setting that totally captivated and intrigued me. Readers be captivated by the slow burn romance Regency romp, with nods to Georgette Heyer.

I fell in love with characters and the descriptive authentic language, that really add so much to the storyline.

Bravo to Jane Dun, for writing a stunning book, that was a joy to read. I loved every minute I spent within the pages of this lovely book.

The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch By Melinda Taub

Genre: Historical Fantasy, Austenesque Fiction

Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (October 3, 2023)

Length: (400) pages

Format: Hardcover, eBook, & Audiobook

ISBN: ‎978-1538739204

Tour Dates: September 25 – October 9, 2023

BOOK DESCRIPTION

A “wildly inventive and utterly addictive” (Julia Quinn) witchy reimagining of Pride and Prejudice, told from the perspective of the troublesome and—according to her—much-maligned youngest Bennet sister, Lydia.

In this exuberant retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet puts pen to paper to relate the real events and aftermath of the classic story. Some facts are well known: Mrs. Bennet suffers from her nerves, Mr. Bennet suffers from Mrs. Bennet, and all five daughters suffer from an estate that is entailed only to male heirs.

But Lydia also suffers from entirely different concerns: her best-loved sister Kitty is really a barn cat; Wickham is every bit as wicked as the world believes him to be, but what else would one expect from a demon? And if Mr. Darcy is uptight about etiquette, that’s nothing compared to his feelings about magic. Most of all, Lydia has yet to learn that for a witch, promises have power . . .

Full of enchantment, intrigue, and boundless magic, The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch, has all the irreverent wit, strength, and romance of Pride and Prejudice—while offering a highly unexpected redemption for the wildest Bennet sister.

The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch by Melinda Taub, is the perfect twist on Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice.

Quote:

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter must be a witch.”

A tantalizing story that features Miss Lydia Bennet as a witch, and her familiar, Kitty.

I throughly enjoyed this book that infuses witchcraft into the events in the beloved Jane Austen classic. New light is breathed into some of Jane’s underrated characters in the original book. The narration along with the superb character development kept me spellbound. From the first page I was hooked, and I found myself completely immersed, and was unable to set it aside. The magical elements in the storyline was inventive and engaging. So creative and original, I especially loved how it was written in a epistolary format. As a reader you feel that you are the receiver of a personal letter. This way the author is able to catapult the reader into the events of the book. It also gives an insight into the characters reasoning for their actions and feelings.

Bravo Melinda Taub, for writing a book that completely fascinated me and I couldn’t put down, along with not being able to stop thinking about it long after I finished reading it.

The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch it is quite the deliciously fun, compelling and an all consuming page-turner.

Excerpt

He sees a child dart forward and snatch a red handkerchief from a lady’s purse.  He peers closer, recognizing that scruff of pale hair.  The familiarity is a balm, a reminder that he is not alone in this roiling mass of industry.  Silas smiles, and calls out, ‘Albie!’
But the boy does not hear him.  And then Silas understands: he has been caught.  A woman’s hand is on his wrist, the handkerchief a limp flag in his fist, and Silas slips on a piece of turf in his haste to hurry over, readying himself to play Albie’s rescuer, to beg her not to notify the authorities – but then he sees that Albie is laughing.
Silas looks at the woman more closely.  She is as tall as a man and has her red hair tidied into a long plait.  She is – Flick?  Grown up, womanly.  But it cannot be.  This woman has a slight stoop on her left side.
It is as if a bell has been rung in an old house.  Silas has felt the tremor of the wire as it runs deeper into the building, through walls and floors.  He stands transfixed, watching as the vibrations set a series of smaller bells ringing.
He could not say what it means.

– Elizabeth Macneal, The Doll Factory

Opening sentence:

“When the streets are at their darkest and quietest, a girl settles at a small desk in the cellar of a dollmaker’s shop.”

In the art of the Pre-Raphaelites, we see a marriage of visual art and literature. Their early works are filled with scenes from the literary world, taken from authors such as Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Keats. These works demonstrate the interconnection of artistic expression and the written word in a way that goes far deeper than merely illustrating

Iris is our leading lady. Alongside her twin sister, Rose, they toil away at Mrs Salter’s Doll Emporium creating objects of beauty. But Iris is unsettled. She wants to paint, she wants the freedom to create her own masterpieces, not just what someone demands of her. I did feel for Iris, she is trapped in an uninspiring situation and when she is offered opportunity for something better, she grabs it. I became her cheerleader as I read this book, she is strong, talented and full of ambition.

This new life leads her to become involved in with the pre-Raphaelite’s and we meet the key artistic figures of this movement. Elizabeth Macneal has seamlessly and brilliantly inserted real-life people into a work of fiction. I didn’t know a great deal about the pre-Raphaelite’s before reading this, but after I finished it, I whiled away some time Googling and looking at the stunning works of art and have fallen head over heels for them. I love it when a book prompts me to do a little research!

The story is told from multi-view perspectives, Iris’ as well as from, Albie the street urchin’s and from Silas, an obsessive collector of weird and wonderful things.

Iris and Silas have a brief encounter, after being introduced by Albie, to which they have very different reactions to! As you read this, you do become very aware of a creeping sense of danger and tension. Especially the further along you get in Silas’s narrative. The tension slowly builds and builds and it leads you to a chilling, dramatic conclusion.

If you historical fiction, or are just in the mood for some creepy Victorian fiction, thenThe Doll Factory might be for you. Macneal has captured London perfectly; evoking all the seedy bars and fancy houses and everywhere in between. Her characters are beautifully rendered; they are endlessly fascinating to watch and I was disappointed when the book ended.

It is hard to imagine this is a debut as it is really impressive; great characters, evocative writing and a truly gripping story.

What more can you want out of a book?

Overall a really excellent debut. Highly Recommended.

You can purchase The Doll Factory (Picador) here.

That’s it for today. Thanks so much for stopping by and happy reading!
