Everyone knows of William Shakespeare, the rakish former actor and famous playwright. But few know the three women writing every word of his plays: Mary Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, a frustrated poet; Emelia Bassano, a court musician with a passion for complex stories; and Jane Daggett, a seamstress with an impressive ability to spin fantastic plots. Frustrated by the patriarchal restrictions of their sixteenth-century society, they come together to write anonymously.

As the plague deepens its grip on London and the Queen’s man traces their every move, the women are forced to choose between admitting what they’ve done and betraying each other to the Crown or hiding the truth at risk of endangering the Queen herself.

The Shakespeare Secret is a thrilling feminist tale of perseverance, justice, and freedom where friendship and trust are put to the test, for fans of Tracy Chevalier and Charlie Lovett.

Historical fiction meets feminist intrigue in this twisty, clever reimagining of literary history.

What if Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare? In The Shakespeare Secret, D.J. Nix takes that age-old question and spins it into a rich, entertaining thriller set against the dark and dazzling world of Elizabethan London.

Three women—Mary Herbert, Emelia Bassano, and Jane Daggett—each brilliant in her own way, are bound by their frustration with the limits imposed on them by society. Together, they craft the plays that will shape English literature forever—but only if they can stay hidden, outmaneuver the Queen’s spies, and find the right man to take credit for their genius.

This novel is a page-turner with brains, heart, and sharp edges. It’s equal parts literary mystery, political thriller, and feminist uprising. The tension crackles, the dialogue sings, and the “what if” premise is executed with precision and flair.

A down-on-her-luck Victorian governess and an unrepentant rogue enter into a fake engagement during a lengthy voyage at sea in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews’s sixth book in her acclaimed Somerset Stories series.

Stranded in India after being dismissed without a reference, governess Beatrice Layton exchanges her freedom for passage home to England, taking a position with the only family that will hire her. But Bea hasn’t reckoned for just how dreadful her new employers will be. Stuck with them at sea in increasingly desperate circumstances, she finds an unlikely champion in the injured ex-soldier traveling aboard their ship.

Colonel Jack Beresford has spent the last fourteen years serving in Her Majesty’s Army. Though time has lent him maturity, it hasn’t dulled the roguish impulses of his youth. When he’s confronted with the tantalizing prospect of a damsel in distress, he naturally steps in to rescue her. His solution? An engagement of convenience, of course. One that will last only as long as their voyage.

But once back on land, Jack and Bea’s simple arrangement is beset by complication after complication. There are former passengers to contend with, and meddling society matrons. Most complicated of all, there’s Jack’s family—his parents, siblings, and precocious nieces and nephews—all of whom seem to think that Bea might be perfect for him. Jack is beginning to think so too. All that remains is to convince bold, beguiling Bea that he’s perfect for her.

Please excuse any grammatical errors, or typos. I have done my best, but in reality I am just reader, and will leave the writing to all the incredible authors out there.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers..

The Governess and the Rogue,is a beautifully tender finale to Mimi Matthews’ Somerset Stories—a series that has held my heart from the very beginning. While this sixth book can easily be enjoyed as a standalone, long-time readers will be thrilled by the return of familiar faces and the warm, interconnected world Mimi so carefully builds.

In this beautifully rendered Victorian romance, Mimi Matthews once again proves why she’s a beloved voice in historical fiction. Her sixth entry in the Somerset Stories series delivers everything readers adore—nuanced characters, slow-burn yearning, and a story rooted in both honor and heart.

After being unjustly dismissed in India, governess Beatrice Layton faces the terrifying prospect of returning to England with no money, no reference, and no protection. When she secures a position with a disagreeable family bound for home by sea, her plight only worsens—until fate intervenes in the form of a wounded, rakishly charming army officer.

Colonel Jack Beresford has seen war and loss, but when he meets Bea aboard the ship, he’s moved by her strength and quiet dignity. To shield her from disgrace, he offers a solution: a fake engagement to last just until they dock in England.

But what begins as a protective fiction grows dangerously close to reality. Back on land, entanglements mount—former shipmates, high society’s whispers, and most meddlesome of all, Jack’s delightfully interfering family. Suddenly, the lines between pretend and possible begin to blur. And for Jack and Bea, walking away may no longer be so simple.

Matthews weaves an exquisite tale full of emotional tension, sparkling wit, and just the right amount of societal drama. Readers who love the governess trope, slow-burn romance, and emotionally mature heroes will find this an utter delight. Elegant, tender, and brimming with charm—this story of love born in the unlikeliest of places lingers long after the final page.

Uplifting, emotionally nuanced, and oh-so-swoony, The Governess and the Rogue is historical romance at its finest.

Highly recommended for fans of clean romance, feminist heroines, and happily-ever-afters that feel earned.

Unfortunately, her quest puts her at odds with the ambitious new lord who recently inherited the title and Hawthorn Abbey from his estranged uncle.

Recovering from wounds of both body and spirit, Captain Rafe Hawthorn is intent on restoring his long-neglected ancestral home. His plans to rebuild the abbey’s once thriving orchards require a road that will pass straight through Bridget’s potential trove of artifacts. He will not–cannot–fail again, even if he is moved by Bridget and her passion.

Yet this impasse might not be their greatest obstacle. A natural disaster and a series of suspicious accidents threaten both their plans, along with the livelihood of the nearby villagers dependent on their success. Set in the peaceful English village of Bramnor, this story follows Bridget Littleton, a bold young woman passionate about uncovering the past—and Captain Rafe Hawthorn, a wounded veteran determined to secure his future. When their dreams clash over a newly discovered Roman mosaic, sparks fly, secrets unravel, and hearts are tested.

Told in dual POVs, this novel is a masterclass in slow-burn romance, with layers of faith and forgiveness at its core. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic simmers deliciously, and the emotional growth of both characters is deeply satisfying. Hovde’s prose is lyrical, her research is rich, and her message is hopeful.

Whether you’re in it for the brooding hero, the clever heroine, the archaeological mystery, or the spiritual journey—this book delivers. Highly recommended for fans of Julie Klassen, Sarah Ladd, or anyone craving historical romance with depth

Newly widowed Princess Adelheid Kinsky thought she was free—until she learns of her abusive late husband’s final betrayal. The son she believed dead, the illegitimate child of a forbidden love, still lives. To secure his future, she must marry within a month—without revealing the truth. Her best prospect? The Duke of Hartland, a notorious rake drowning in debt.

Meanwhile, Hartland sets his sights on Olivia Fontenoy, an heiress whose fortune could solve all his problems. But innocent Olivia dreams of music, not marriage, and seizes the chance to perform in disguise at the King’s Theatre—unwittingly ensnaring everyone she knows in scandal.

A princess with a scandalous secret. A duke desperate for a wealthy bride. A debutante torn between duty and passion.

As deception and desire collide, Olivia finds herself drawn to Hartland’s closest friend, the quiet yet passionate Marquess of Lewiston—a man who offers her something far more profound than mere security. And for Adelheid, an unexpected alliance may hold the key to her dreams.

With a surprising ending worthy of grand opera, The Soprano’s Daring Duke is a sweeping Regency tale of love, risk, and the courage to defy expectations.

REVIEW

The Soprano’s Daring Duke is the second installment Book in the Double Dilemma Romance Series by the  very talented author Susanne Dunlap

The Soprano’s Daring Duke is a richly layered Regency romance that delivers scandal, secrets, and soaring emotion in equal measure. Set in a society where appearances are everything, this novel explores what happens when love—and music—refuse to stay hidden.

At its heart are two strikingly different heroines, both struggling under the weight of society’s expectations, both dealing with their own secrets.

Princess Adelheid Kinsky is newly widowed and finally free from a cruel husband—or so she thinks. But when she learns that the child she believed lost is alive, she must obey her late husband’s codicil if she wants to inherit anything, and marry a  respectable nobleman and must claim her illegitimate child as his heir.

So she travels to London during the height of the season and sets her cap on infamous Duke of Hartland, a charming rake with a mountain of debt. Yet beneath his devil-may-care attitude, we glimpse a man capable of true loyalty and affection.

Olivia Fontenoy is a debutante that dreams of marrying for love, and a chance to let her voice fly free. Restricted by society and bullied by her over bearing mother to secure a good match. When she is pursed by the fortune-hunting Duke, Hartland she feels trapped. Olivia takes her reputation into her own hands and does the unthinkable and steps onto the King’s Theatre in disguise. Her risky behavior could well be her undoing, and her is drawn to a kindred spirit the Marquess of Lewiston.

Susanne Dunlap meticulously weaves dual storylines beautifully, blending high stakes with heart, deception with desire. Themes of sacrifice, freedom, and choosing love over convention give this novel a resonant emotional core.

♡ I was captivated from start to finish, and I especially enjoyed that music played such a central role. I am looking forward to the next book in this stunning regency series.
