The old world is burning down
A hero will rise from its ASH.

James Calbraith, delivers a riveting tale of a Saxon boy, Ash Seaborn

This intense character driven adventure, with in-depth battle scenes, is incredible intricately plotted. A founding saved from the seas, with only fleeting moments of memory of a battle from which his people fled from. When a unmerciful, disorienting storm separates him from his people, he is found washed up on a beach shore with only a rune stone tied around his neck to connect him with his past.

Taken in as a son and raised at a villa by Pascent, a Roman master of a Villa, he is brought up along side their natural son, Fastidiu . The young Saxon Ash, is given an amazing opportunity tutored in the classics, by the Priest Paulinus.

He is trained in both barbarian and civilized warfare techniques, by Falco, a Frankish bodyguard of Master Pascent. Ash is brought up in the Christian faith, in the Roman household, until the Frank, Falco introducing him to the old gods of Saxons and ancients of his people. With an ancient right of passage, Ash is given a glimpse of fate or destiny and later on presented with a spear fashioned like that of his people, by a master blacksmith.

Young Ash sees the political turmoil in and around the Dux of Londinium, in Wortigern’s Court, a struggle that is about to determine the future of all Britannia.

When a series of events and developments, The Saxon born Ash, will go through trials and he will to make a a decision that will ultimately put his life on a clear path.

James Calbraith, delivers a compelling gripping tale, with intense characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the structure of this story and it had me hooked right from the very first chapter. The author gives superb battle and fighting sequences, with rich atmospheric details, that puts the reader front and center in the action packed adventure.

Calbraith, elaborate blend mythology and historical fiction is both captivating and entertaining. An inspiring tale that catapults in to early Britannia, with authors strong narration this book is one you want to pass up.

An intriguing and impressive start to a new series, a captivating coming of age tale of a young warrior destined for greatness.

A child of Saxon blood, an heir to Roman family, who’s destiny is like no other, to join the two races and forge a new world from the ruins of the old.

The Saxon Spear by James Calbraith, is the first volume of the Song of Ash Saga.

Of Silver and Shadow Book Review by Jennifer Gruenke

Ren Kolins is a silver wielder—a dangerous thing to be in the kingdom of Erdis, where magic has been outlawed for a century. Ren is just trying to survive, sticking to a life of petty thievery, card games, and pit fighting to get by. But when a wealthy rebel leader discovers her secret, he offers her a fortune to join his revolution. The caveat: she won’t see a single coin until they overthrow the King.

Behind the castle walls, a brutal group of warriors known as the King’s Children is engaged in a competition: the first to find the rebel leader will be made King’s Fang, the right hand of the King of Erdis. And Adley Farre is hunting down the rebels one by one, torturing her way to Ren and the rebel leader, and the coveted King’s Fang title.

But time is running out for all of them, including the youngest Prince of Erdis, who finds himself pulled into the rebellion. Political tensions have reached a boiling point, and Ren and the rebels must take the throne before war breaks out.

A lovely intimate portrait of a young lady Anne Emmons, set in Regency Period.

Anne’s want more from a marriage than a business arrangement, and after seeing how her beautiful friend, Fanny has faired. She is in no rush to be just settled.

Her loving father, a man who has acquired his wealth and lands by trade, knows that with her sizable dowery she has an opportunity to claim a title. Anne and her close friend Fanny have a warm and caring friendship. Fanny and her family have taken Anne under their wing and brought her out amongst society. Shy and thoughtful Anne knows she is still not excepted in most of the tons circles, coming from a background of commerce instead of both parents having been titled

I enjoyed reading this heartwarming and captivating novel with its Regency time period details and description of the realities of domestic life.

What I really appreciated and noted was how the author captured social rise of the middle class and gender roles of this time period. Anne the main protagonist soon realizes that she has her own talents and interests. somehow the approval of society has became less important to her than it once was. Anne also has interest in a ancient Roman artifacts, that have been found in and around Britton. Or that she has written a manuscript on the it.

She satisfied with being alone and wants a marriage that it meaningful, not to be a wife that brings a large dowery to a gentleman of the gentry who‘s lands and manor might be in a state ruin.

As a friendship slowly develops over a period of time with one of our fathers business associates. Will Anne open her life up, and come to realize she that this gentleman is seeking only her heart?

Marriage & Gender Roles

As we see in the regency period , questions of land ownership and inheritance are closely interlinked with courtship and marriage. In the late eighteenth century, English conceptions of family and the role of women began to change, as British culture became increasingly focused on the accumulation and concentration of wealth within the family. One way for families to rapidly accumulate capital was through advantageous marriages. As a result, the position of daughters within the family changed, as they became the means through which a family could attain greater wealth. Familial aspirations, coupled with women’s increased dependence on marriage for financial survival, made courtship a central focus of women’s lives.

You are alone in the woods, seen only by the unblinking yellow moon. Your hands are empty. You are nearly naked.
And the wolf is angry.
Since her grandmother became her caretaker when she was four years old, Bisou Martel has lived a quiet life in a little house in Seattle. She’s kept mostly to herself. She’s been good. But then comes the night of homecoming, when she finds herself running for her life over roots and between trees, a fury of claws and teeth behind her. A wolf attacks. Bisou fights back. A new moon rises. And with it, questions. About the blood in Bisou’s past and on her hands as she stumbles home. About broken boys and vicious wolves. About girls lost in the woods—frightened, but not alone.
Elana K. Arnold, National Book Award finalist and author of the Printz Honor book Damsel, returns with a dark, engrossing, blood-drenched tale of the familiar threats to female power—and one girl’s journey to regain it.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

The memory is a mix of pleasure and shame, and you wonder: For the rest of your life, every time you experience that pleasure, will shame be its shadow?

-If you are triggered by themes of sex, sexual assault and vengeful murder, you might approach this book with little bit caution!-

This is no childhood fairy tale,..

The memory is a mix of pleasure and shame, and you wonder: For the rest of your life, every time you experience that pleasure, will shame be its shadow?

Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold, is fast paced, creatively darkish tale, rich with descriptive imagery that sucks you in. I would recommend parents to actually take an active role in reading what is considered YA, and decide for yourself if this is appropriate.

With that being said, I as an adult loved every minute of this book,

Arnold’s descriptive writing of a young woman’s menstrual cycle, seems to me to be focused on the phases of moon. The author uses this as an empowering tool throughout the storyline, which adds a lot of occult and magical realism elements into it. The riveting plot line kept me engaged from start to finish, one thing I immensely enjoyed, was the second person present tense. This happens to be one one of my all time favorites, which an incredibly hard thing to pull off. Elana K. Arnold capabilities as a powerful author is incredible, as you read through her seamless narration.

Set in modern Seattle, Bisou Martel has been in the of her grandmother since she was four years old. Living the normal life, when something happens on the night of her Homecoming, when she finds herself running for her life in the woods.

Being chased by a wolf, or something else, her memory is not actually clear.

Bisou fights back, and when revaluations as to what actually took place in the view of a new moon, some questions need to be answered.

Through the unleashed powers of coming of age, she will be a force to be reckoned with, when mysterious wolves start to prey on female classmates.

A vengeful Bisou, will use. her special ability and the female bonds of friendship, along with empowerment of womanhood to right some unthinking wrongs.

ELANA K. ARNOLD is the author of critically acclaimed and award-winning young adult novels and children’s books, including the Printz Honor winner Damsel, the National Book Award finalist What Girls Are Made Of, and Global Read Aloud selection A Boy Called Bat and its sequels. Several of her books are Junior Library Guild selections and have appeared on many best book lists, including the Amelia Bloomer Project, a catalog of feminist titles for young readers. About the Author

I am a USA Today Best Selling Author of Historical Jewish Fiction mainly set during World War 2. My father was Romany and my mother was Jewish, When I was very young I learned about the Holocaust. I couldn’t understand how something like this could happen. So, I began to research and learn more. I met with survivors. I even met with children and grandchildren of SS officers. But I still had no answers. I cannot say that I have all of the answers to all of my questions even now. But what I do know is that soon all of the survivors will be gone. Their message must be remembered, the sacrifices that they made must not be forgotten. And so I humbly and with the utmost humility, I try to tell their stories. It is painful, but I must convey the darkness and horror of the time, however, I also want the world to know and celebrate the unsung heroes. Because there were many ordinary people who acted in heroic ways. I realize that writing these books is a great responsibility. I pray every day that I am able to do this correctly. I am trying to reach out and touch many people, not with the message of the horrors but with the promise of hope. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my work. It is an honor that I never take lightly.

The intrepid librarian Shona McMonagle, erstwhile Marcia Blaine Academy

back in time to help out.

Forging an uneasy alliance with newly widowed Madeleine, Shona is soon

drawn into a full-blown vampire hunt, involving several notable villagers, the world-renowned soprano Mary Garden – and even Count Dracula himself. Will Shona solve the mystery, secure justice for the murder victims and make it

through a deathly denouement

in the hall of mirrors to return to present-day Morningside Library?

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Shona McMonagle is an enchanting heroine, a middle aged time-travelling librarian, who happens to be masterly trained graduate, of the Marcia Blaine School For Girls.

Shona McMonagle newest adventurous assignment will involve a little time traveling from her present job at Morningside Library. McMonagle to the 19th century Russia, to solve a crime case.

Upon Shona, arrival in tiny French village of Sans-Soleil, named perfectly because it lies permanently in the shadow of the surrounding ominous mountains.

Right from the start she realizes there is definitely something afoot and she is presented with her first mystery. A local police man has been reported missing, he may or may not be dead. His wife Madeline is under the impression that he is definitely dead. Shona with the help of the vivacious widow Mrs Madeline seek to uncover the facts and clues that surround the policeman disappearance.

As the tale unfolds the mayor and townspeople are continuous acting strangely suspicious. While trying to sort out what her true mission is, Shona soon discovers a good many people have recently been torn to death by wild animals. Intriguing

Local legends and drummed up fear of vampires might just be sufficiently justified..

I was captivated from page one. I found this story to be wonderfully creative and engaging, well thought out, well paced, Stunning comic timing adds mirth. You find yourself laughing out loud at various points within the book. The book has inventive, lovely well developed characters that were immensely entertaining! There just amount of action that keeps the storyline flowing perfectly.

The plot is engaging and keeps you turning the page; and the conclusion is completely satisfying.

★I have found a new author that I absolutely adore, I highly recommend this delightful book to my family and friends ★

Olga Wojtas is an unconventional – and very witty – writer of postmodern

crime fiction whose surrealist humour has been compared to the likes of PG Wodehouse, Jasper Fforde and the Marx Brothers. Her debut novel,

This clock, when functioning correctly, generated all the electricity needed to keep the house fully functioning. Mr. Quigley had recently acquired the property, and he was willing to pay handsomely for the Tinkers’ services.

The golden coins he emptied onto the shop counter were just a fraction of the compensation offered for a successful completion of the task.

WHEN STARS ARE BRIGHT is a magical historical realism, a captivating Thumbelina retelling with a perfect amount of thrilling drama to keep you immersed from start to finish.

1930, Holland. Lina Holt, is a Dutch seventeen year old, who has a passion for single. She works with her mother in the tulip fields. She has fallen for Christian Van Buren, the incredibly wealthy heir to a petroleum fortune. Christian reciprocates the same emotional feelings, but his family’s response is quite the opposite. In a turn of events, an abduction finds Lina, on a ship bound to America.

Upon arriving in the down trodden depression era of 1930’s New York, she takes the the spotlight lead of a vaudeville show where she’s paired with Nik, a mysterious pianist. This spellbinding ya fantasy is full of drama, Magic, and heartache. Perfect for fans who want the perfect amount of escapism that comes from a delightfully thrilling storyline. I enjoyed the characters and the magical realism elements, and the plot twist.

Excerpt

There’s a certain thrill in doing something forbidden. Sneaking out past curfew, dancing freely to a jazz band, stealing kisses in a dark corner. Any one of those things will send my mother into hysterics. I’m not sure what she’ll do if she finds out I’m doing them all at once. When she finds out, because she always does.

But, if I want to see Christian, it’s my only choice.

The band electrifies the air with each note they play. At least fifty strangers twist and turn around us in the empty barn, and the lingering scent of hay tickles my nose. Christian doesn’t seem to notice the lack of marble floors or fancy wall sconces. His eyes haven’t left my face since we got here, except for the kissing.

His arms cocoon me near the wall, and I lean into his chest. He’s warm and sturdy against me, and I close my eyes. The soft thump of his heartbeat beneath my palm dulls the sharp edge of missing him, but it never stops cutting. It won’t as long as we’re forced to sneak around behind our parents’ backs.

“Are you tired, Lina?” Christian twists one of my curls around his finger. “We can go.”

“We’ve only been here an hour.” And there’s no telling how long until we can meet again. I stretch up on my toes, the hem of my yellow skirt tickling the back of my knees, and kiss the fine stubble on his cheek. “Come on. I love this song.”

Pulling Christian behind me, I find a free spot in the middle of the barn. Dozens of worn, dusty boots and Mary Jane’s slam down on the planked floor, sending bits of straw and dirt into the air. The music vibrates against my body, and we join the rhythm.

The band wears worn slacks and checkered shirts like the rest of the crowd. Christian’s the only one here without patched clothes or any idea of the work that will go into filling this barn with hay tomorrow. No one will have the energy for dancing after a day of haying. They’ll be lucky to drag themselves to bed before collapsing, my mother and I included, though it will be a different field we work in the morning.

Sweat trickles down Christian’s temple as we kick up dust of our own, and a wide grin breaks out on my face. I’m not the best swing dancer, far from it, but I don’t care. Giving myself over to the music makes me feel weightless. Free. No one pays attention except Christian, and he’s not much better. When the trombone sounds its last note, I laugh and collapse into his arms, breathless.

“Want to get something to drink?” I ask over the start of the next song.

He nods and leads me back through the crowd. His cotton shirt clings to his skin, showing off the muscles in his arms and back, and gray suspenders hang down from his waist. After more than a year together, it’s the most I’ve seen of him, and it would be a lie to say I’m not enjoying it. If we didn’t have to sneak around, I’d make him go dancing every weekend for the view alone.

“Wait here.” He slips under a slanted support beam at the back of the barn, and kisses me. When he steps away, he keeps hold of my hand until he’s too far to reach. “I’ll be right back.”

I scoot farther under the protection of the beam until it grazes my hair, and watch his head bob above everyone else. A lantern burns beside me, casting a warm glow, and the band plays their own version of Puttin’ on the Ritz. There’s no singer tonight, without a microphone it would be impossible to hear one anyway, but I know the words. I hum along with the smooth sound of the saxophone, my foot tapping in time with the bass and, before I realize it, I’m singing.

It’s a cheery tune, but I keep my voice quiet. My mother is the only one who’s heard me sing since I was little, and she insists I keep it that way. Being known as the infant abandoned in a tulip field, I’m used to whispers behind my back. Going steady with the heir to the Van Buren petroleum fortune only makes things worse. I don’t mind being thought of as an unlovable gold digger—not much anyway—but I’m tired of standing out. I especially have no interest in drawing a crowd tonight like I did when I was five. Twelve years later, I still get chills thinking about the people that closed in on me as I hummed in the marketplace.

A heavy man inches along the wall, hunching over to fit beside me. His eyelids droop over dark eyes, and his round face is close enough that I can count the pockmarks. His breath wheezes over the music. “You have a lovely voice. Where did you get it?”

I slam my mouth shut on the last line of the song. Naturally, the one time I sing in public someone’s listening. Though it’s only one person, this is somehow equally unnerving.

“Have you thought about a career?” The strange man leans closer. From his dialect, it’s obvious he’s from a different part of Holland.

“A career?” I shift away, and scan the crowd for Christian. When I don’t see him between here and the water barrel, I step away from the wall.

The man bobs his head up and down, his jowls shaking, swallowing the yellow-stained Marlboro collar. “In show business. With that delicate face of yours, the blond hair and blue eyes, it would be easy to make a name for yourself. I’ve never felt an addictive quality as strong as yours either. Of course it’s rare. Where did you get it?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Keep your secrets, little Symric. Fairy folk always do.” He inches closer still. “But what do you say? You want to make it big in America with me?”

My laugh is quick and high-pitched. Where are you, Christian? “No.”

“You should.”

“She should what?” Christian asks from the opposite direction. He steps up beside me without refreshments and wraps an arm around my shoulders. I lean closer.

Series: Parish Orphans of Devon, Book Four
Genre: Historical Romance

A winter reunion for the orphans brings romance for Neville Cross in Book 4 of Mimi Matthews’ USA Today bestselling Parish Orphans of Devon series.

She Needed to be Seen…

As a lady’s companion, Clara Hartwright never receives much attention from anyone. And that’s precisely how she likes it. With a stormy past, and an unconventional plan for her future, it’s far safer to remain invisible. But when her new employer is invited to a month-long holiday at a remote coastal abbey, Clara discovers that she may not be as invisible as she’d hoped. At least, not as far as one gentleman is concerned.

He Wanted to be Heard…

Neville Cross has always been more comfortable with animals than people. An accident in his youth has left him with a brain injury that affects his speech. Forming the words to speak to his childhood friends is difficult enough. Finding the right things to say to a lovely young lady’s companion seems downright impossible. But Miss Hartwright is no ordinary companion. In fact, there may not be anything ordinary about her at all.

During a bleak Devon winter, two sensitive souls forge an unexpected friendship. But when Clara needs him most, will Neville find the courage to face his fears? Or is saying goodbye to her the most heroic thing he can do?

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Winter Companion is the fourth and final book in Mimi Matthews’ Parish Orphans of Devon series. This was a delightful book, like all the others in this series.

There is something special about all the books that this highly talented author has written. This one, just like the others is endearing as it is charming. The romance is swoon worthy and the author creates such an mesmerizing ambiance that actually brings forth a warm cozy feelings.

These feelings will make you light hearted long after you have finished reading the book. This is a exceptional rare talent only seen in very few authors I have read before.

The two main characters, Neville Cross and Clara Hartwright, come together splendidly. Both of them have wonderful qualities and make a really lovely couple. They are compatible with each other as they both have emotional human kindness toward animals and the less fortunate.

Neville is the quiet and strong hero and a captivating gentlemen. His injuries are depicted in such a way that makes him all the more sweeter and lovable. Clara, is definitely one of my favorites, her caring warm disposition is a treasure.

Mimi Matthews writing is incredible she delivers a stunning well paced and beautifully written love story here with interesting, compelling, and believable characters that I found quite compassionate to read about. I felt connected with characters and enjoyed how the plot line unfolded.

There’s is some dramatics from the past and personal events that adds a layer of depth within this lovely captivating book.

This heartwarming book was a splendidly written, with richly descriptive details. The engaging prose and captivating characters, made it one of my favorite Victorian romances ever.

This is a spoiler free review so I won’t say to much on account because I don’t wish to give away to much of the emotional and perfect romance away to those who have been patiently waiting for this book.

Just across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas, Matamoros was the only harbor where the South could ship its cotton to Europe, and smuggle in arms for the rebellion. So it was a haven for Yankee and Rebel spies and diplomats, gunrunners and cotton smugglers, runaway slaves, bandits, Texas Rangers, and rogues of every stripe.

But Matamoros was also full of French Foreign Legionnaires – because that same year, Napoleon III had invaded Mexico, to install Archduke Maximilian of Austria as Emperor.

Set against the backdrop of two wars, this is the story of Clay – an expatriate Southern gentleman running a gambling hall – and Allie, his ex-con artist partner, bringing her cotton train to market – in a star-crossed affair that may or may not survive their conflicted allegiances amidst the tides of battle.

Praise for Matamoros

“A historical novel offers an in-depth view of the machinations surrounding the Civil War battle for Texas. Kahn descriptive prose delivers powerful images…Strong leads star in a passionate war tale filled with political intrigue, violence, and scoundrels.” – Kirkus Reviews

“The author does a wonderful job of capturing the different elements of the setting, exploring the historical and social aspects. The prose is beautiful and highly descriptive, and readers will enjoy the social commentaries that punctuate the narrative. This is an awesome read, fast-paced and filled with action. The author paints exciting images of a town flourishing in times of war and makes readers feel as though they were part of it.” – Readers Favorite, 5 stars

Praise for Matamoros CD

“The music paints a powerful but poignant portrait of these disparate renegades, outlaws, and outcasts, each intent on their own survival. The sumptuous paintings included with the CD add a bonus element as well, and given the complete packaging a story, music and art it confirms the fact that concept and creativity far outweigh the amorphous nature of digital downloads. More than that, Matamoros is an album for the ages, both heartbreaking and affecting in equal measure.” – Lee Zimmerman, The Daily Ripple

“Few songwriters have the determination to tell full-length stories through their songs. Greats, like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, are a couple of notables in this limited group coming immediately to mind. Therefore, James Kahn has placed himself in a uniquely special group with this song collection. These songs are so good, in fact, they make you want to read Kahn novel to learn even more, which makes this album a storytelling gem.” – Dan MacIntosh, The Daily Ripple

“Kahn excels in the diverse composition of story-songs that capture not only the emotional and historical intricacies of their lyrical subject matter but also the natural sonic accompaniment for their travails. The lyrics are intelligence, the performances are skillful, and Kahn works within the limits of his voice to communicate with the heart and mind of the listener. Matamoros subverts the American addiction to instant gratification, and pop culture resistance to complexity and nuance, and while doing so, gives his listeners songs that they can sing.” – David Masciotra, The Daily Ripple

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Clayton Wilkes, is a proprietor of Brave River Gambling Emporium located just south of the border in Matamoro. Before the wars, Matamoro, Mexico, was a sleepy village of just 300 people, it lay across the Rio Grande River from Brownsville Texas.

This made Matamoro Mexico, a strategic port during the Civil War. Since union gunships could not by law blockade foreign ports, it became a advantageous door of opportunity for the confederacy. Allowing southern cotton to be exported to world, and other materials to be smuggled into the south.

1863, the population exploded to 40,000 people or so. Becoming a notorious place, where all kinds of class of characters inhabited the area from thieves and cons, both union and confederate spies. Shady and disreputable hooligans of the devious sort. Where shady business deals and economics exchange hands, and an assortment of renegades, cotton smugglers, depict the diverse multicultural and social classes of the town.

This exquisitely researched, complex novel, with its punchy narration and lively dialogue, will keep you captivated. Entertaining well fleshed out characters adds to the stunning epic plot line. The really intriguing sub-characters are just as wonderful as the main characters, adding a appealing diversity. There also is a notable romantic storyline, that is creatively woven in perfectly within the novel. As the novel unfolds you will be captivated by the dynamics of Clayton and Allie. Their conflict offers an insightful perspective of with the political and emotional turmoil that where the struggles of the day.

I really enjoyed reading this novel, it was one of those books for me that the characters jumped right off the pages. The authors execution was impeccable, he masterly sets characters conflicts that held my attention all the way through to the end. The book has great pace and depth, transporting you to the town of Matamoro, Mexico. Historical, riveting atmospheric details set the backdrop to the authors seamless writing prose. The authors strength as writer shows through as he meticulously describes scenes with such lush imagery that you are fully immersed in the world he has created.

Happy Wednesday to you! I hope your week is overflowing with bookish delights.
I am delighted to welcome a wonderful author to the blog today,
the ever so lovely, Nancy Bilyeau

Dreamland
by Nancy Bilyeau

Publication Date: January 16, 2020
Endeavor Quill
eBook & Paperback; 386 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

The year is 1911 when twenty-year-old heiress Peggy Batternberg is invited to spend the summer in America’s Playground.

But the invitation to Coney Island is unwelcome. Despite hailing from one of America’s richest families, Peggy would much rather spend the summer at the Moonrise Bookstore where she works voluntarily, than keeping up appearances with Brooklyn socialites and her snobbish, controlling family.

But soon it transpires that the hedonism of Coney Island affords Peggy more of the freedom she has been longing for. For one, she finds herself in love with a troubled pier-side artist of humble means, whom the Batternberg patriarchs would surely disapprove of.

Disapprove they may, but hidden behind their pomposity lurks a web of deceit, betrayal and deadly secrets. And as bodies begin to mount up amidst the sweltering clamour of Coney Island, it seems the powerful Batternbergs can get away with anything…even murder.s

It is up to Peggy to overcome the oppression of her family and clear the name of her vulnerable lover, before she or her beloved sister become the next victims of Dreamland.

Extravagant, intoxicating and thumping with suspense, bestselling Nancy Bilyeau’s magnificent Dreamland is a story of corruption, class and dangerous obsession.

‘Nancy Bilyeau’s passion for history infuses her books Alison Weir

1. What does the title mean?

It’s the literal name of an amusement park in Coney Island, opened in 1904. That’s where my main character finds herself in the early part of the book and meets one person who changes her life dramatically but she meets other important people there too. However, it has another meaning: some of the main characters are in a dream when it comes to functioning in the world. The dream can be a pleasant one, or a dangerous one.

2. Tell us a little about your story and the story world you’ve created.

It’s New York City, 1911, and rebellious young heiress Peggy Batternberg reluctantly accompanies her family for a holiday at the luxurious Oriental Hotel, on the Atlantic Ocean. But less than a mile away, Coney Island, “America’s Playground,” beckons with forbidden delight — and danger for Peggy and those she loves most.

3. Tell us a little about how this story first came to be. Did it start with an image, a voice, a concept, a dilemma or something else?

When I was researching Coney Island for a nonfiction story assignment I found a video clip on youtube that showed the hundreds of thousands of amusement-park electric lights twinkling at night, reflecting in the Atlantic Ocean. It was spine-tingling and magical and I thought I would like to set a novel there.

4. Are any of your characters based on real people you know?

The Batternberg family behavior was based in part on two wealthy families I have had the opportunity to observe. 😊 Several characters are closely based on real people but none I knew personally.

5. Which character was most challenging to create? Why?

Stefan was challenging. I’m comfortable writing artists as characters—my father was a watercolor landscape artist. His Serbian background meant I needed to do extra research to get him right. I read a few books and watched documentaries. Rebecca West’s book ‘Black Lamb and Grey Falcon’ helped a lot. Also I worked on a website with a Macedonian woman, that gave me some insight. I went to a Serbian restaurant on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and she texted me what to order.

6. What did you learn while writing the book?

I learned how to create a special world set in another time and to write a main character who reacts to that world in a way that pulls in the reader.

7. Were you a young writer, a late bloomer, or something in between?

I knew I wanted to be a writer at the age of 8. My third grade teacher announced that I described the trees and leaves well in an assignment following a field trip.   I wrote poems and stories in school, and when I went to college I wrote for the newspaper—it was The Michigan Daily at the University of Michigan. After graduation, I was a journalist and then an editor at newspapers and magazines. But I didn’t start writing screenplays and novels until I was in my early 40s and I had a family. So I’m both a young writer AND a late bloomer.

8. Do you have a dedicated writing space? I wish! I write at the kitchen table, on the couch, sitting up in bed, at the public library, or in a corner of Starbucks.

9. Any type of writing ritual you have? When I’m in the most important creation stage, coming up with characters and plot points, I like to get up before dawn and write quickly, letting my subconscious take a lead role.

10. Do you write in silence or with Music? In the latter part of writing a novel, I use music a lot. I actually follow certain film composers because their creations for films usually are meant to tell an emotional story. Depending on the mood I’m writing, I turn to Bernard Herrmann(Hitchcock’s favorite), Trevor Jones or Wojciech Kilar. If you haven’t listened to Kilar’s score for the film “The Ninth Gate,” I urge you to do so. But also with ‘The Blue’ I listened to a lot of Beethoven. For ‘Dreamland,’ it was Camille Saint-Saens.

11. What is your favorite genre to read, and why? Historical Fiction was my first love and while I enjoy mysteries and women’s fiction and a bit of horror, stories set in the past are the most rewarding to me, the most fascinating.

12. Are you working on something new at the moment? Can you share any details? I’m interested in writing another book set in this same time, the end of the Gilded Age.

#Review

Have you been to America’s Playground? Coney Island?

I’ve always wanted to visit.

Dreamland has Coney Island as a backdrop, and it’s 1911.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

Dreamland is a suspenseful historical fiction of obsession and desire.

This fascinating portrait of the end of the Gilded Age was a fabulous start to 2020. Set in New York 1911, the Battenberg family are one of the richest in America, with the Vanderbilts and Rockerfellas,

Peggy Battenberg is a young heiress who struggles against the bonds of societal restrictions placed on women of her class. Peggy, against her families wishes takes a job at the Moonrise Bookstore, and lives with her ex teacher. When her family intervenes, and she is told that she is required to take a summer vacation at the Oriental Hotel, a once-grand oceanfront resort on Coney Island. For the sake of her sister Lydia, who is engaged to the rich Henry Taul, Peggy succumbs to her family’s wishes.

Nancy Bilyeau’s writing catapults you into this vibrant outstanding thriller set in end of Gilded Age. Dreamland is a splendid, intoxicating book, with plenty of multi layered suspense.

Nancy Bilyeau delivers an extremely entertaining storyline, with captivating underlying tension. This gripping, perfectly paced and well-written read here that I absolutely loved how seamlessly and cleverly written this story was, and thought the author did a fabulous job with the delivery. I was totally invested all the way through to the satisfying end.

Dreamland and the rest of Coney Island is an intoxicating, hedonistic and full of life. Peggy gets to experience life from a completely different perspective than she has ever before. Mixing with artists, dancers, the inhabitants of Lilliput, along with food vendors. There is also a sinister side to this plot line, that adds an intriguing twist to the book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Scandal and intrigue along with family drama makes for an extraordinary thought-provoking novel. A fabulous mystery/thriller that I was immediately drawn into and devoured quickly.

Foul Is Fair

(Foul Is Fair #1)

Hannah Capin’s Foul is Fair is a bloody, thrilling revenge fantasy for the girls who have had enough. Golden boys beware: something wicked this way comes.

Jade and her friends Jenny, Mads, and Summer rule their glittering LA circle. Untouchable, they have the kind of power other girls only dream of. Every party is theirs and the world is at their feet. Until the night of Jade’s sweet sixteen, when they crash a St. Andrew’s Prep party. The night the golden boys choose Jade as their next target.

A reminder to all, You should not be silenced. But vengeance is has its ultimate consequences.

An unapologetic modernized, MacBeth retelling a dark tale of revenge and tragedy set at a California prep school. Foul and Fair takes its ruthless inspirational revenge from iShakespeare’s Macbeth, positioning Elle’s friends as the three witches, Elle assumes the role as that of Lady Macbeth, and Mack as Macbeth. Rather than convincing him to kill out of ambition, though, Elle convinces him he is killing out of righteousness.  Elle’s murderous rage slashes through the entire book.

Ruthless with a heavy dose of lyrical writing. Foul is Fair offers an unapologetic modernized MacBeth retelling. A ruthless, absolute carnage of an avenging story that centers on a dark bond between friends, and how far they’re willing to go for one another. A reminder to all, we will not should not be silenced.

When they crash a party at St. Andrew’s Preparatory School to celebrate Elle’s sweet sixteen, the golden boys on the lacrosse team separate Elle from her pack, like so many wolves on the hunt. Duncan, king/captain, singles Elle out for slaughter; his younger brother, Malcolm, slips Rohypnol into her drink; and Porter guards the door while teammates Duncan, Duffy, Connor, and Banks take turns raping her. Duffy’s on-again, off-again girlfriend Piper witnesses the assault, but does nothing to stop it.

This is only the beginning, this book is not for the faint of heart. Please understand this novels examination of ones self-destructive power through vengeance.

This devastating and emotionally charged intense book is ultimately finding the strength and rising above being a victim. It also sheds a the light on being a vigilante has its moral and mental consequences to us all.

Thank you to FFBC and Imprint Reads for providing me with an ARC of this book. Some parts may have been changed as I did not read the final book. Please know that all of the expressed thoughts are my honest opinions.

This first installment in a high-stakes adventure, duology, that was a spectacular read. Readers of YA fantasy looking to enjoy a unique magic system will enjoy reading about Visida’s diverse magic.

All The Stars And Teeth, is phenomenal young adult epic fantasy, with a fierce princess who teams up with a pirate, and a intriguing cast of crew members, in order to save her kingdom from a dangerous new threat of destructive new magic. A tale of the bonds of friendship and the strength to never give up.

Adalyn Grace’s writing completely blew me away, It hooked me right from the first pages into this epic fantasy with vivid imagery, and well developed cast of characters.

A tale full of pirates, soul magic wielding princesses, and furious mermaid, seven distinctive unique magic systems, and an expansive fantasy world.

This was a wonderful fast paced story with everything I could hope for and more!

A bones and teeth, edge of your seat thrill ride fantasy. I loved every minute of this tale, while gripping the edges of my seat the entire time. I was completely immersed in this engaging, tension filled book.

Exceptional world building, the author has really created something special with this tale. The writing pulls you in from page one and keeps you fully captivated and intrigued until the very end…and oh what an incredible ending, leaving you wanting more.

Amora Montara, princess of Visidia, has been training in magic her whole life to take over her father’s throne. Amora Montara, and her family possess soul magic. Besides being able to see someone’s soul..she can use hair and or blood from a person to bond them to a bone. ..this definitely is where the magical elements in this book are more darkish then most ya fantasies.

All she has to do is one demonstration of her ability to use this magic and she will ascend to the throne. But after her demonstration goes horribly awry, she seeks other ways to ascend to the throne.

Joining forces with, Bastian, the rakish mysterious pirate, who saves Amora, along with Ferrick, Amora’s fiancé, a mermaid siren who helps navigate through the cursed waters after they rescue her.

As they journey through the kingdom of Visidia, Amora and her friends go through they encounter monsters, magic, and danger around every Corner. There are seven islands in the kingdom, and each island is practicing one kind of magic. While every

person in Visidia is only able to to learn one kind of magic, or else a curse would befall the kingdom. We only visited four of these islands in this book, I’m excited to see where the next book in this dualogy will bring us.

One of my favorite characters is the Mermaid.

The only mermaids I love are the ones that lure men to the death bed, with in with their songs. Vataea, is by far my favorite character a stellar vicious mermaid who quickly displays that there’s more to her than her looks to her. She is badass, treacherous and does whatever it takes to survive. I absolutely loved her and she is queer also.

Exceptional representation of close bonded camarades adds depth and memorable dynamics. Facing dangerous circumstances and high seas adventures, with incredible dark magical elements makes this a stunning read .

Overall, if you love an emotionally charged dark fantasy wrought with incredible world building, magick, unlike no other ya fantasy.

Some of my favorite Quotes:

It’s not too late for us; we are not the mistakes of our family. We have the opportunity to change Visidia for the better.

“we’ve shared an experience only a few people will understand, and it’s marked our souls. the sea is a beast more fearsome than even the lusca.”

“fear is part of life; all that matters is what we do with it.”

Adalyn Grace graduated Summa Cum Laude when she was 19-years-old. She spent four years working in live theater, and acted as the managing editor of a nonprofit newspaper.
