Genre: Historical Fiction/ Historical Romance

England 1650: Civil War has given way to an uneasy peace . . .

Royalist officer James Hart refuses to accept the tyranny of the new government after the execution of King Charles I, and to raise funds for the restoration of the king’s son, he takes to the road as a highwayman.

Elizabeth Seton has long been shunned for being a traitor’s daughter. In the midst of the new order, she risks her life by sheltering fugitives from Parliament in a garrison town. But her attempts to rebuild her life are threatened, first by her own sense of injustice, then by falling in love with an outlaw.

The lovers’ loyalty is tested through war, defeat and separation. James must fight his way back to the woman he loves, while Elizabeth will do anything to save him, even if it means sacrificing herself.

EXCERPT

Traitor’s Knot, by Cryssa Bazos

Excerpt #5 (950 words)

Elizabeth Seton couldn’t understand the greed of seagulls. The two birds beat their wings and fought over a scrap of offal while ignoring the endless sea. She had a desire to pick up her skirts and, so running, scatter them to the sky. But from behind her, a rock was thrown at the birds. It bounced off the cobbles a foot away from them. Gulls took flight, and Elizabeth whirled around, equally startled. A soot-faced urchin winked and scampered off.

Elizabeth smiled in the direction of the retreating boy and continued down the quayside towards the market. The wind off the bay freshened, whipping her dark hair and skirts. She tucked an errant lock back into her coif and snuggled deeper into her blue woollen cloak. No time to tarry. She had business to attend.

When she neared the market, her stomach gave a nervous flutter. Positive thoughts breed true. She adjusted the basket that rode in the crook of her arm and pressed on.

Elizabeth wended her way through the market stalls, not stopping at the rows of long whitefish laid out silvery across wooden boards. Their fresh scent of the sea beckoned for a closer inspection, but her business was with the oystercatcher’s wife. If it went well, she’d return for one of the smaller ones.

Elizabeth’s boots tapped against the stone cobbles, and she practised under her breath, “I hear, Fishwife Midden, that Margery has left your employ.” Annoyed with herself, she shook her head. The woman would think she was a gossip, and no one trusted a loose tongue. Elizabeth needed to impress her. The Middens preferred their help young enough to be trained to their ways, but at twenty-two, Elizabeth found herself at a disadvantage.

There was a time when Elizabeth didn’t need to worry about finding employment. Before the war, her father, Thomas Seton, had once been a respected shipwright, his trade crucial in a seaside town, while her mother, Mary, was a healer and the first to be fetched for matters regarding childbirth and sickness. Elizabeth had expected to follow her mother’s calling.

She passed a row of empty stalls and for a moment considered selling their ointments, but she knew better. A gift for a gift, never coin—her grandmother’s mantra. No matter how reduced their circumstances, Mary Seton would never accept payment for physic. It didn’t matter. None would purchase in public what they now avoided in private.

When Elizabeth spied a knot of women at the cheesemonger’s, she slowed down. Here was the elite of Weymouth—officers’ wives and those closely connected to the Parliamentary governor. They were particular friends of her older sister, Kate Hallet, though none of hers. Elizabeth considered skirting their position, but instead she lifted her chin, held her breath and stayed true. As she passed, one said, “There’s Seton’s girl. Shame about that business.”

Elizabeth flinched, but she forced herself to ignore them.

Though the war had ended a year earlier with the King’s execution, the divisions had never been repaired. Even Kate, who had married a Parliament garrison soldier, kept a resolute distance from Elizabeth and their mother. Only a handful of Royalist families still concerned themselves with her family’s welfare.

Up ahead, the oystercatcher’s stall thronged with customers. Elizabeth took heart and made her way to the front.

“There you are, mistress.” Fishwife Midden greeted her with a smile. Her nose was tipped pink, and her hands were gnarled from working in the cold seawater. “You’ve picked a good day. The oysters are plump and juicy. Six or eight?”

Elizabeth hesitated. “Four, if you please.”

“Only that?” The woman’s brow’s puckered. She bent over a barrel and scooped out the oysters, placing them in Elizabeth’s basket. “How’s your mother doing? I heard she ain’t well.”

“Better, thank you,” Elizabeth replied, handing over two of her remaining coins. “I’m certain she’s taken a good turn.”

“God save her,” the fishwife said. “We’ve missed her these past few months.”

Elizabeth watched the old woman edge away, her eyes darting to the next customer. This was her chance. “I was wondering . . .”

“Aye, deary?”

“I ran into Margery the other day—”

“Did you now? Stopped to chat, did she?” Fishwife Midden rested her hands on her round hips.

“I had a thought—since my mother is doing better, she’ll need less of my attention,” Elizabeth said. “You’ll need help now that Margery is gone. I can attend behind the counter or sort out the catch.”

Fishwife Midden’s expression softened. “I’m afraid not, deary.” She started to turn away, and Elizabeth laid her hand on the woman’s arm.

“You can pay me half of what you paid Margery. I’ll still bless you for it.”

“You’re worth more than that, sweetling,” she replied, “but I can’t take you on.”

“Please.” Elizabeth hated to beg but swallowed her pride. “For the regard you and your husband once bore my father, for all the repairs he made on your fishing boats without a shilling . . .”

“Mistress Seton,” she said with the slightest emphasis on her last name, “it’s impossible.” She glanced past her shoulder and nodded to someone. Elizabeth turned and found the officers’ wives flanked behind her.

“Are you done, Fishwife?” their leader asked. “If I’m delayed in this manner, I’ll press on to another stall.”

“Apologies, mistress,” Fishwife Midden said. “Did you want your usual quarter barrel?”

The flow of the market passed over Elizabeth, rendering her invisible. It always came down to that. Not many in Weymouth dared doff their caps to the memory of those, like her father, who had taken a stand for the King.

The rest of the town still called them traitors.

Damn This Book Was Good♥︎

Are you ready for an incredible stunning fantasy?

Filled with mysterious immortal monster hunter, with a kickAss Heroine♥︎ Add mythical creatures and a creepy ancient curse!!

Ankou, known as Lazarus has been cursed for 300 years of a deathless death. A paid mercenary he hunts down monsters within the Five Lands, and destroys them. Florelle {Flora} Tanett is handmaiden to Princess Betheara Ilurosa. When her quite world comes crashing down and everything she has known is completely destroyed.

An horrific event leaves her leaves for dead, if not for the intervention of an all blacked clothed stranger. A friendship sparks as the two set out on an epic quest. Ankou seeks to end his unrelenting curse that causes him to be become a skeleton that travel the inbetween of life and death. Flora seeks to find her best friend and future Queen, Princess Betheara Ilurosa. Their journey is joined by another intriguing character Atonais. I just adored him, and he added some great comic dialogue.

This fantasy that packs a punch! Yes it’s dark, and riveting, but it also tackles some thought provoking themes. To me I found it to be darkishly delightful! The YA world building and writing is not to demanding so it makes it a fast read.

The characters are well developed and three dimensional. The narration was seamless and I thought the slow burn romance was perfect and well depicted. The author intricately plots a character driven fantasy adventure.

This one book that you don’t book pass up!

Kate Pentecost is one author to look out for, and the book That Dark Infinity a sealed place in my library.

Please be advised readers to look into content warnings on this book.

“Death made equals of cowards and heroes, friend or foe.”

-Windswept, Annabelle McCormack –

Windswept by the debut author Annabelle McCormack is a riveting book.

Full of suspense and intrigue that occurred in the Middle Eastern campaign of WWI,

Strong willed Lady Virginia Whitman otherwise know as Ginger, is a red-haired war nurse. Ginger is far from her once privileged life in Britain, now she finds herself in the front lines, stationed at a field hospital for wounded soldiers in Gaza Palestin.

When Ginger finds a severely wounded Turkish soldier who reveals he is a spy for British intelligence, and who is in fact in possession of crucial information that would have devastating consequences should it fall into the wrong hands. Throwing caution to the wind Ginger decision to help him places her in a dangerous game of espionage.

This was fast paced propulsive storyline, offering both drama and a smoldering romance. Spies and secrets, the reader will find themselves captivating with the spitfire heroine. The atmospheric imagery along with crucial details place you the reader front line and center.

This is one book that I highly recommend to my friends and family who enjoy superb historical fiction.

I have to say this might be my favorite WW1 book of all time

Thorns Are No Match For Sleeping Beauty’s Sister

-Briarheart Mercedes Lackey –

A vivid younger YA retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

In this light hearted fantasy Princess Aurora is a baby, and the main character is her half-sister Miriam. Miriam will do everything in her power to protect her baby sister.

In a series of events at Aurora’s christening fifteen year Miriam doesn’t think twice when a dark Fae moves to cast a curse on the baby, Miriam blocks it. In doing so she discovers some very intriguing things about herself.

This time Lackey gives her audience a delightful, feminist perspective on an age old fairytale. She has created a wonderful slightly younger fantasy tale.

A quick read, that I enjoyed reading from start to finish

Mercedes entered this world on June 24, 1950, in Chicago, had a normal childhood and graduated from Purdue University in 1972. During the late 70’s she worked as an artist’s model and then went into the computer programming field, ending up with American Airlines in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A lush reimagined historical fantasy of the old ballad “Twa Sisters”.

Lucy Holland’s Sistersong is a magical phenomenal tale, that interweaves folklore and magical realism.

Set in sixth century Dumnonia Britain, the storyline takes off after Rome has abandoned the Isles of Britannia. The continuous threat of the encroaching Saxons, as they bombard the coastlines. King of Cador realm is losing its ties with the lands as the old religion is being ever so slowly pushed out by the One god and his followers. The Death of Jane Lawrence

The Death of Jane Lawrence

By Caitlin Starling
Gothic Horror

October 5, 2021
SYNOPSIS

From the Bram Stoker-nominated author of The Luminous Dead comes a gothic fantasy horror–The Death of Jane Lawrence.

“Intense and amazing! It’s like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell meets Mexican Gothic meets Crimson Peak.” —BookRiot

Practical, unassuming Jane Shoringfield has done the calculations, and decided that the most secure path forward is this: a husband, in a marriage of convenience, who will allow her to remain independent and occupied with meaningful work. Her first choice, the dashing but reclusive doctor Augustine Lawrence, agrees to her proposal with only one condition: that she must never visit Lindridge Hall, his crumbling family manor outside of town.

Yet on their wedding night, an accident strands her at his door in a pitch-black rainstorm, and she finds him changed. Gone is the bold, courageous surgeon, and in his place is a terrified, paranoid man—one who cannot tell reality from nightmare, and fears Jane is an apparition, come to haunt him. By morning, Augustine is himself again, but Jane knows something is deeply wrong at Lindridge Hall, and with the man she has so hastily bound her safety to.

Set in a dark-mirror version of post-war England, Caitlin Starling crafts a new kind of gothic horror from the bones of the beloved canon. This Crimson Peak-inspired story assembles, then upends, every expectation set in place by Shirley Jackson and Rebecca, and will leave readers shaken, desperate to begin again as soon as they are finished.

“Don’t read this one alone at night; Caitlin Starling has done it again. Unsettling, atmospheric, and downright brutal at times, The Death of Jane Lawrence will continue to haunt you long after you leave Lindridge Hall…if the house lets you leave, that is.” —Genevieve Gornichec, author of The Witch’s Heart

REVIEW

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

LAKESEDGE by Lyndall Clipstone is a delicious gothic styled fantasy!

Seventeen years old, Violeta “Leta” Graceling will do anything to protect her younger brother. Arien who is plagued with menacing dark shadows. It is almost like a sinister magic is trying to consumes him. Orphaned the two children were found by a woman who they call “Mother” wondering alone on the edge of a forest. As the two grow older Arien’s dark and dreadful powers threaten to be unleash. Trying to eradicate the black forbidden magic from Arien Mother becomes more and more abusive.

In a series of events that happen during a trip to the village, Arien catches the eye of Rowan Sylvanan, the lord of the land. Rowan moves to bring the young troubled boy back to his mansion. Violeta will have none of it, unless she is able to accompany her brothers Arien to the lords home of Lakesege.

Whispers of evil deeds done by Rowan Sylvanan, the Lord of Lakesedge has been circulating. Violeta and Arien don’t know what to believe. The Lord claims he can help the young boy, or is a ruse for a complete control over Arien’s dark magic. Violeta is determined to uncover secrets about the one they call, The Monster Of Lakesege.

Lakesege by Lyndall Clipstone, is a meticulously written book that takes snippets of classical tales to create a masterful storyline. A slow and steady ominous tone of dread takes the reader by the hand and guides them through the pages.

The characters are well developed, and the YA angst was well depicted. I enjoyed the slow burn romance that carefully builds, simultaneously as the secrets start to unfold in the plot line. Clipstone gives us a brilliant atmospheric world. She uses gothic elements, and old world nuisances to catapult the reader into a lush and menacing world.

Some of the things I found quite remarkable were that the villagers pay tithes to the lord, of the land. To the ever so slightly Pagan Festivals, that the village and its residents celebrate with changes of the season, and lets not forget who they worship to. The dark corruption that is steadily growing up and around the manor house. Rowan and Violeta will be faced with the rising darkness and their decisions might make you frustrated, which kept me flipping through the pages.

Lyndall Clipstone does an excellent job in creating an immersive, engaging book that I positively could not put down. There is so many things that I loved about this book.

Series: Linfield Hall, Book #2
Genre: Historical Romance/Regency

About to turn thirty, Charles Finch finally realizes his luck has run out. He’s twenty thousand pounds in debt, his entire family hates him, and the powerful Duke of Rutley is watching his every move. So Charles sets out to do what any handsome but impoverished earl would: find a young lady with an impressive dowry to marry him and replenish his coffers.

Louisa Strickland much prefers managing the successful estate her father left her to the company of society. But now that her younger sister has come of age, Louisa finds herself in Mayfair, forced to protect her family from desperate fortune hunters like her neighbor, Charles Finch. And when Charles sets his sights on Louisa’s sister, Louisa will do anything to avert his attention elsewhere.

As Charles and Louisa find themselves rekindling an old friendship that once went up in flames, Charles begins to wonder if there could be something more between them. He only needs to prove he’s not the man he once was. But unfortunately for Charles, it will take much more than passionate kisses and giving up brandy to convince independent Louisa to marry a rake like him.

REVIEW

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A Rake Like You by Becky Michaels Is the second installment in the Linfield Hall series, following Lady August.

Independent and cynical, red haired, bluestocking, Louisa Strickland, was everything I hoped she would be. Strong willed and determined, she is an outstanding character in this new standalone regency romance by Michaels.

Louisa Strickland has resigned herself to a life of spinsterhood, sacrificing

marriage for her independence. She wants nothing more than living in the country and maintaining the estate her unconditional father left her. Or so she thinks….

Longtime neighbors Miss Louisa an Charles Finch disguise themselves as a couple. Louisa became enamored of him.. maybe she came very close to thinking marriage wasn’t so bad. When she walked in on her pretend love interest with an opera singer. She made sure never to let her heart get in the way of what she truly desired. But

that was years ago, now Louisa’s younger sister Flora is coming out. Flora’s beauty and her weighted dowry makes her the ideal catch of the Season.

Viscount Charles Finch, Earl of Bolton, a rake of the first degree. His hardcore drinking, womanizing and extensive gambling has made him the perfect retch for redemption. After coming to turns with his addiction to drink, giving up the vile stuff.

His problems are not even close to being over with. He is over his head in debt, actually the correct number is twenty thousand pounds. The powerful Duke of Rutley has made it his personal agenda to make sure that Charles follows through on their agreement. His family life has suffered greatly from his pure lake of compassion and his self centered treatment towards them.

The Impoverished Earl of Bolton, Charles Finch, has no alternative but to marry a woman with a large dowry to reestablish his estates coffers.

A Reluctant Romance….

The author has created an engaging and memorable heroine, and her highly accomplished writing ensures that the reader is swept along in this lovely regency romance. I enjoyed the twists along with the slow building romantic tension the author so expertly written. The banter and comic timing made for a delightful book that I found very enjoyable

I like many other readers are pleasantly looking forward to reading what this author comes up next.

Stalking Shadows by Cyla Panin is a tantalizing eerie gothic tale.

Eighteen century France, two sisters live in an isolated village. Marie and Ama make their living selling perfumes made by aromatic flowers and plants. Having lost their mother and their useless father has gone to drink. Shunned by local villagers for their strange ways, they guard a deadly howling secret.

Incredible atmospheric world building, along with a gorgeous old world setting makes this YA Fantasy standout. Let’s not forget the true heart of the storyline is the bond and love the two sisters have for one another.

A darkish twisted book, that made for the perfect escapism, I devoured in one day. Ominous and deliciously grim with moral grey characters through out its pages. Steeped in superstition, along with a slow burn romance, this is one book that will catapult you into dark forests, a crumbling manor house, along with a hint of witchcraft…. Exceptional!

🤎🤎🤎

The Matchmakers lonely Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen, Is a delightful Victorian Proper Romance® that brings the perfect amount of suspense and a slow burn romance.

Victorian London we follow Amelia Hampton, a somewhat naive young woman who is trying to be a success columnis. She truly believes in romance, and marring for love. She struggles with the notion that their are those people who don’t always have the best intentions. Needless to say one in particular that is a charming member of a book club she attends. In a series of events she crosses path with Michael Baker, a detective heading an investigation involving the dashing book club member, Mr. Radcliffe. As the storyline unfolds the two are on opposites sides in this engaging clean romance. The more they find themselves together the more their working relationship becomes something much more. Amelia finds herself drawn to the captivating Radcliffe, and the nonchalant detective Michael Baker.

Which one is being honest with his true intentions toward this optimistic young lady?

The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen is a engaging historical romantic, with light suspense to keep you turning those pages. I loved the characters and thought they were well developed. Our leading lady’s growth was wonderful to watch. I thought the pace was brisk and I was immersed within story. As a reader you will enjoy Amelia’s struggle with wanting to be free of the restraints that were placed on women during this era. The light romance was well depicted and loved watching it unfold.

A perfect proper romance to be sure, with just enough suspense to keep the reader on their toes!

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Summer on the seaside . . . a perfect place for romance.

Join us for three novellas in one collection:

The New Countess, by Josi S. Kilpack
Diane knows why the earl asked her to marry him; he needed a mother for his daughter, an heir for his title, and a hostess to assist with his position in Parliament. With two sons of her own, and no security to speak of, she never thought twice about accepting his proposal. Summering at his holiday cottage at the sea was meant to be reward for a busy first year as the new countess, and a time for her to rest before their baby is born. She is expecting lazy days on the beach with the children, simple meals, and keeping her own schedule. When the earl surprises her with a visit, she does her best not to resent the intrusion. When she learns that he came for the sole purpose of being with her and getting to know her better, she realizes that perhaps this marriage can be more than she expected. Is she ready for him to know her and love her and explore this new possibility together? She wants to be, but it is not an easy thing to let go of expectations and open up to an entirely new way of life.

Mishaps and Memories, by Martha Keyes
Judith Jardine’s one chance at a brilliant match is doomed from the start when she is ignored and then mocked by the ton’s most sought-after gentleman. Under a gloomy cloud of failure, Judith is exiled to a seaside cottage to spend the summer helping her sister—and living a life far below the one she experienced for her week in Brighton. When she discovers the man responsible for her misfortune unconscious on the beach, she heeds her better impulses and has him brought to the cottage to be seen to. But James Carlisle has no recollection of who he is, what happened to him, or how he has wronged her, and Judith sees the opportunity to teach him a valuable lesson—unless the deception and her feelings get the best of her first.

Moonlight Summer, by Heather B. Moore. Since 2015, Mirror Press has been presenting the Timeless Regency Romance Collection, a curated anthology of novellas and short stories set in early 19th century England. Featuring bestselling authors from the historical romance genre, the series has hit the USA TODAY bestselling list and charted at #1 at Amazon.com.

Oscar Rosewell’s life is not lacking in many things even though he lives on the fringes of society due to his father’s ruined reputation. He’s sworn off having any personal relationships with ton members—his only interest lies in keeping his business thriving. He’s content with his day-to-day anonymity, and business keeps his heart from getting exposed. It’s safer that way. Until Oscar meets Miss Dorothea Atkinson. A woman capturing his interest is a rare thing, but Miss Atkinson is nearly engaged to a man of her parents’ choosing. Would it be wrong to wish for something to go terribly wrong between the couple? Soon, Oscar learns that wishing can become a reality, but often, the price is an even heavier thing to pay.

REVIEW

From the desk of Gwendalyn Anderson

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A Seaside Summer, by Josi S. Kilpack, Martha Keyes, and Heather B. Moore in this latest installment in the Timeless Regency Collection.

A memorable Regency book with depth and wonderful characterization. I highly recommend this positive inspirational fiction♡

Each of three stories were lovely, taking place on a holiday near the seaside. I enjoyed each sweet tender romance in the latest edition to the Timeless Romance Anthology® collection from Mirror Press.

The book is heartwarming with three dimensional fleshed out characters, that are well developed. All three authors narration captures your attention and pulls You, the reader in. Their very talented ability to write creative short stories is well noted. Short stories can be very difficult to pull of, and in this book all three authors succeeded. The book had me hooked from start to finish, I literally couldn’t put it down. Each plot is so unique and absorbing. I found myself in a constant state of curiosity, and I personally loved how the ending ended with each having a positive outcome.

The is my first read in the book series and I have to say the writing and storylines were delightful and heartwarming. Clean, feel good tales, that made me smile and altered my disposition into of happiness and content after reading each one. I won’t give a detailed review, because it would spoil the enjoyment for other readers.

Just know that this book definitely lived up to its promise and I have already purchased more in this enchanting series.
