Easily persuaded by John, she is tasked with delivering her brothers manuscript to a popular author Mr Oliver, who happens to be staying at the Swanford Abbey.
Swanford Abbey, turned hotel, is notorious for its chilling tales of haunted spirts. Rebecca checks into the hotel hoping to deliver her package to the author. Rebecca regrets ever having agreed to become involved in her brother’s scheme.
A mystery is afoot, and the killer needs to be caught. When the secrets start to unfold, and Frederick Wilford knows Rebecca is hiding something.
A mysterious gentle romance, with gothic nuances blended in. The romance, along with the chemistry of Rebecca and Frederick, had the right amount tension. Making for a proper regency romance, that I throughly enjoyed.

A Highly Addictive, Wickedly Dark YA Fantasy
The girl of Dorcha Wood is the first installment in Kristin Ward’s Daughter of Erabel series.
A wickedly dark fantasy, we follow an intriguing girl named Faidh. Who lives deeply secluded with her mother Riona in the Dorcha Woods. The woods are shrouded with tales of forbidding and evil.
Faidh lives in harmony with the creatures that inhabit the mysterious woods. She possesses an uncanny ability to communicate with the forest animals, along with mystical creatures that protect her and the forest, the Cu-Sith.
When Faidh witnesses an attack on a young man Gideon, who is left for dead in the eastern meadow. She does the unthinkable and brings him back to her home. In a series of events that will change everything for Faidh and those she loves. Leaving behind the safety she has known in the Dorcha Woods, she will find herself questioning her actions and those she has but her trust in.
A fast moving creative fantasy tale, that captured my attention right out of the starting gate. Inventive world building, dark mysterious forest full of mythical creatures. Sinister villains that do unthinkable deeds, who are perfectly depicted.
Ward excels at her seamless narration switches back and forth between multiple POV’s. Therefore giving the reader a full perspective of the thoughts and actions of her characters. The settings and the fantasy elements are brought to life with unique details. Irish mythology is woven into the storyline, making it a highly addictive read.
The ending is such a cliffhanger and is done in such a way that you will want to grab the next book in this compulsory YA fantasy series The Blood In The Lost Kingdom

The Winter Charlatan
By Victoria McCombs
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
As we tread deeper into the wintery months, and the cold northern winds descend upon us. I curiously picked up The Winter Charlatan by Victoria McCombs. This is the third installment in McCombs’s The Storyteller’s Series, and by far my favorite. An insatiable fairytale retelling, full of political intrigue and betrayal.
We follow Rowan the daughter of the king and queen of Elenvérs. Knowingly switched at birth because of a haunting curse that has been handed down. Unbroken, this generational curse continues to plague the woman in Princess Rowan’s royal family line. Cassian, and Princess Rowan were strategically switched at birth by their parents.
Rowan, granddaughter of the first cursed princess must live in secret, as the pretender sits in her rightful place. Raised as a noble, she is able to move freely within the court without as much restrictions if she was living as a Princess.
Princess Rowan is steadfast in her pursuit to take back what is rightfully hers. At all cost, she seeks to find a away to remove the curse. She is courageous and flawed, making her an easily relatable character. Rowan is a determined princess, and her character growth from the beginning of the book to end is something to behold. I loved her relationship with her foster sister, Elis, as well as the dynamics with Cassian.
One of the best reimagined fairytales I have had the chance to read in awhile. The story is like a steam-train rolling. Meticulously picking up speed as the tale progresses along. Gorgeous winter landscapes, along with frozen atmospheric imagery, places the reader within the heart of this captivating book.
A suspenseful absorbing, and a highly compulsive read here, that has quite a remarkable ending. Victoria McCombs has created an engaging and memorable heroine, and her highly accomplished writing ensures that the reader is swept along in this stunning tale.
Some of the things I love most in this world are peppermint hot chocolate, peanut butter ice cream, golfing dates, Jesus, and game nights with family. And of course, books.
Fairytales were my first love. I became obsessed with the idea that if one was brave enough, they could defeat dragons, and that true love was real. I met my true love in college, and together we raise our two boys. I have my dad to thank for teaching me to love writing, and my mom to thank for allowing us to keep a wall of medieval weapons in the house, which curated my love for that time period.
My dream is to write vivid worlds and charming characters that will leave an imprint on my reader’s hearts, the way that so many books have done for me.

Synopsis
The Justice of Kings, the first in a new epic fantasy trilogy, follows the tale of Sir Konrad Vonvalt, an Emperor’s Justice – a detective, judge and executioner all in one. As he unravels a web of secrets and lies, Vonvalt discovers a plot that might destroy his order once and for all – and bring down the entire Empire.
As an Emperor’s Justice, Sir Konrad Vonvalt always has the last word. His duty is to uphold the law of the empire using whatever tools he has at his disposal: whether it’s his blade, the arcane secrets passed down from Justice to Justice, or his wealth of knowledge of the laws of the empire. But usually his reputation as one of the most revered—and hated—Justices is enough to get most any job done.
When Vonvalt investigates the murder of a noblewoman, he finds his authority being challenged like never before. As the simple case becomes more complex and convoluted, he begins to pull at the threads that unravel a conspiracy that could see an end to all Justices, and a beginning to lawless chaos across the empire.

An Intoxicating psychological thriller seen through the eyes of a female serial killer and the one who hunts her.
Gareth Worthington’s latest novel is nothing like he past books. So hang on to your seats because this one is calculated thrill ride.
Reyna “Rey” Blackburn is a victim of her domestic violent past.
Where as some woman might be shell shocked from surviving her wartime like upbringing, Rey has taken another a different route entirely. She seeks those who take advantage and brutalize the less fortunate. Highly intelligent she has slipped through the fingers of those who seek to bring her to justice. Called the King Kubb Killer, for her interesting way of delivering a death sentence to her victims. She has an uncanny ability, and uses it to take down the men that are monsters. Reys connection with music has always been her salvation, the songs along with musical artists have played an important role in her life.
A disenchanted veteran, Dectctive Arne Huakass is on a man hunt for a killer in the Oslo, Norway. Feeling burnt out after thirty years on the police force, and struggling with his own demons. In a series of events he unknowingly crosses paths with the one dubbed King Kubb Killer. Jaded by his past, he could never fathom a woman behind the violent, and brutal murders.
A moving thought provoking thriller, that weaves effortlessly through dual narration, along with a backstory time slip. This gives the reader a front row perceptive, into the characters thoughts and perspectives. Gareth Worthington pulls no punches here with his descriptive narration and details. Some will find this novel brutally edgy, with it’s in your face and raw morally great characters. I enjoyed the raw completely absorbing storyline, that made for a highly compulsive read. This was the perfect gritty, and intense psychological thriller. I was captivated from start to finish, and found myself completely immersed within its pages.

What would happen if you built one of the world’s most advanced societies inside a forest—and strove to make women full partners in power?
After living for twenty-five years in New York, Naomi Moriyama moved with her husband and co-author William Doyle and their seven-year-old child to the vast forest of Finland’s Karelia, a mysterious region on the Russian border that helped inspire J.R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth fantasies.
She entered a life-altering zone of tranquility, peace, and beauty, the spiritual heart of the nation ranked as the happiest nation on Earth, with among the world’s most empowered women.
Finland is also the country with cleanest air and water and the best schools, a country where motherhood and fatherhood are championed by law, childhood is revered, schoolchildren are required to play outdoors multiple times a day, and trains contain mini-libraries and mini-playgrounds for children to enjoy.
It was here in the Karelian forest that Naomi found a culinary symphony of succulent wild edibles, herbs, berries, mushrooms and fish, all freshly plucked from the moss-carpeted forest and sparkling clear streams.
She also found something that changed her life—a tribe of invincible women who became her soul-sisters.
As an idyllic summer and fall gave way to a sub-Arctic winter of mind-bending darkness and cold, Naomi faced her fears and her future. Over the course of six unforgettable months with her family and her new “sisters”, she found her life transformed, and discovered the power that lay within her all along.
Then she tried to leave. But she kept coming back.
Come, take a journey deep into Europe’s most distant, magical wilderness, and join the sisterhood of the enchanted forest.
With twopieces about parenting in Finland out now with INSIDER, Naomi addresses the question posed by her book – what would happen if you built one of the world’s most advanced societies inside a forest – and strove to make women full partners in power?
After living for twenty-five years in New York, Naomi Moriyama moved with her husband and co-author William Doyle and their seven-year-old child to the vast forest of Finland’s Karelia, a mysterious region on the Russian border that helped inspire J.R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth fantasies.
There, Naomi found something that changed her life – the “Marthas,” a volunteer collective of Finnish women, taught Naomi how to forage for mushrooms and wild herbs, to meditate in steaming saunas, and to drink water straight from crystal clear forest streams. They laughed at the idea of skipping an outdoor event for poor weather, saying that in Finland there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.
Included in this remarkable book about nature, community, and parenting are a myriad of recipes from Finland – Karelian pies, brown chanterelle cookies, lingonberry porridge, chilled blueberry soup, traditional pan-fried perch, and lingonberry-blueberry multigrain bread. I’ve included an example below my signature!
Whether you pick up this book for its insight into traveling Karelia, its meditations on what parenting and gender equality can look like, or just for some delicious recipes, The Sisterhood of the Enchanted Forest offers a journey deep into Europe’s most distant, magical wilderness, and insight into a new way of living, one situated in harmony with nature and in support of gender equality.

Rebel’s Knot by Cryssa Bazos, is the third installment in Quest for Three Kingdoms Series. A moving thought provoking historical fiction, alternates between two points of view. Cryssa Bazos deftly weaves threads of historical fact and people, along with her compelling own characters, to create a mesmerizing tale.

Niall having left Ross castle with dispatches, arrives at his uncles Mulrianne’s byre, to find it burned and his sister, Muairead taken by the English. The only survivor left is a young woman servant.

Until the unthinkable happens and she barely escapes from an English attack on the manor house where she works. Áine finds herself in the care of Niall O’Coneill, a brave Irish rebel.

Parting The Veil
★★★★
There are books and then there are books. This is one of those books that stays with you long after you read the last line.
Parting The Veil is an rewarding historical gothic. Paulette Kennedy’s lush prose and brilliant storyteller makes this book a favorite this year.
Full of plot twist and dark ominous historical details that keep you invested within in its eerie pages. We follow half-sisters who have recently arrived in Hampshire, England from New Orléans, Louisiana. Eliza Sullivan has inherited a manor house and sizable fortune from her great-aunt, Lady Theodora Sherbourne. Certain stipulations to the will include the fact that she must marry within a certain amount of time or she will forfeits her Aunts inheritance. Having avoided marriage in the past she now must look for the one thing she did not want …a husband.
The neighboring estate. Havenwood, owned by Malcolm Winfield is known for its dark family secrets. Located at the crossroads Sherborne house, Havenwood and it’s dark mysterious owner have already piqued Eliza’s interest.
The story starts off intentionally slow, in an ambiguous way as the author sets the perfect tone. Now this is the genius of Kennedy, who deliberately gives you each piece of the puzzle, chapter by chapter. The hauntingly sinister tale of comes together masterfully. Full of deception and romance, along with dramatic family dynamics, kept me on the edge of my seat. The malevolent Havenwood, is a character in its own right, where nothing is what it seems. You will find the characters well developed and fleshed out completely. I especially loved both of the sisters and their bond was well depicted. A riveting tale that you just have to read to know what feeling I’m getting at. It sucks you in and keeps you hungry for more. A slightly modernized dialogue will register with contemporary readers, which helps broaden the scope of the book, along with wonderful queer depiction!
I inhaled this book in one setting, staying up late at night to finish. Steeped with gothic nuances and ghost this was deliciously intense and chilling!

“Losing your past can’t stop you from finding your future.”
Did Some One Say Curses and Dragon?
What happens when you take the Cinderella storyline and reinvent in such away that it becomes even more fascinating. This book has a very inventive twist that not only intrigued me but I found refreshing and delightful. The wronged Cinderella doesn’t just have her thieving step-mama and her cruel stepsisters to deal with, now she has much more issues that need to be addressed. Finding herself cursed she turns into a Dragon when the clock struck midnight. Let’s not forget the Prince, who may or may not be all that chivalrous towards our heroine. Add one sorcerer from a family of assassins who finds himself banished because he harbors a conscious.
The author has created an engaging and memorable heroine, and her highly accomplished writing ensures that the reader is swept along in this captivating tale. Creative world building and a cast of wonderful characters help to propel this book.
I enjoyed mashup and it made for a fast read that held my attention from start to finish. Excited to see what in store from these engaging characters in the next book in this series.

The new audio book of Widdershins is narrated brilliantly by talented actor, Christine Mackie, from Downton Abbey, Coronation Street, Wire in the Blood, and so on.
The first part of a two-part series, Widdershins is inspired by the Newcastle witch trials, where 16 people were hanged. Despite being the largest mass execution of witches on a single day in England, these trials are not widely known about. In August 1650, 15 women and one man were hanged as witches after a Scottish witchfinder found them guilty of consorting with the devil. This notorious man was hired by the Puritan authorities in response to a petition from the Newcastle townsfolk who wanted to be rid of their witches.
Widdershins is told through the eyes of Jane Chandler, a young woman accused of witchcraft, and John Sharpe, the witchfinder who condemns her to death. Jane Chandler is an apprentice healer. From childhood, she and her mother have used herbs to cure the sick. But Jane soon learns that her sheltered life in a small village is not safe from the troubles of the wider world. From his father’s beatings to his uncle’s raging sermons, John Sharpe is beset by bad fortune. Fighting through personal tragedy, he finds his purpose: to become a witchfinder and save innocents from the scourge of witchcraft.
Praise for Widdershins:
The Historical Novel Society said of Widdershins: “Impeccably written, full of herbal lore and the clash of ignorance and prejudice against common sense, as well as the abounding beauty of nature, it made for a great read. There are plenty of books, both fact and fiction, available about the witch-trial era, but not only did I not know about such trials in Newcastle, I have not read a novel that so painstakingly and vividly evokes both the fear and joy of living at that time.”
Dr Helen Steadman is a historical novelist. Her first novel, Widdershins and its sequel, Sunwise were inspired by the Newcastle witch trials. Her third novel, The Running Wolf was inspired by a group of Lutheran swordmakers who defected from Germany to England in 1687.
Despite the Newcastle witch trials being the largest mass execution of witches on a single day in England, they are not widely known about. Helen is particularly interested in revealing hidden histories and she is a thorough researcher who goes to great lengths in pursuit of historical accuracy. To get under the skin of the cunning women in Widdershins and Sunwise, Helen trained in herbalism and learned how to identify, grow and harvest plants and then made herbal medicines from bark, seeds, flowers and berries.
The Running Wolf is the story of a group of master swordmakers who left Solingen, Germany and moved to Shotley Bridge, England in 1687. As well as carrying out in-depth archive research and visiting forges in Solingen to bring her story to life, Helen also undertook blacksmith training, which culminated in making her own sword. During her archive research, Helen uncovered a lot of new material and she published her findings in the Northern History journal.
