Pintip Dunn’s, has done it again with her perfectly executed dystopian YA fantasy, Malice

Alice is just an ordinary girl, who happens to have one an extraordinary brother, Archie, a senior and science prodigy who likes equations and is ver anti social.

When a voice in her head starts telling her she needs to save the world. The voice calls her Malice. And, Malice, is the only way to stop a virus wiping out millions.

Alice knows the virus is created by someone at school, and this is were this page turner, dystopian with riveting shocking twist, makes you grasp the edge of your seat book takes off. I was completely glued to the pages holding my breath with elements of childhood drams and pulse pounding Romance.. I really enjoyed the mentioning of, Thai culture that I thought added some descriptive and notable dimension to this stellar storyline. This fast paced read tackles head first some anti-bullying issues, along with her exceptional three dimensional characters makes this book one of favorites so far this year

I love reading anything to do with Byzantine Empire, I named one gorgeous kitty’s after Zoë Prophyrogenita. So when I was presented with the opportunity to read a book about the incredible Theodora, I jumped at the chance.

Far away Bird by Douglasbased on the life of Theodora, the Byzantine Empress, rising up from humble beginnings in a strict unforgiving class systems to become an Iconic Empress.

Theodora is remembered as one of the first rulers to recognize the rights of women, installing a system of unprecedented codified laws that directly were in favor of women. Also passing strict laws to prohibit the trafficking in young girls and altering the divorce laws to give greater benefits to women. She spent much of her reign trying to alleviate these laws. Sometimes her checkered past tends to overshadow all her crucial accomplishment.

Theodora grew up around the political warring prominent factions of the the Greens and the Blues, that were mostly based around the chariot races at the Hippodrome. Her father, Acacius, held a paid commission as a bear trainer, and was a devoted Green supporter, up until his death in one of riots, Young Theodora and her mother and sisters lived a fairly comfortable lives Then everything changed upon the discovery that their father had lost his life due to some unrest during a night of protesting.

With the threat of being cast out on the streets, Maximina, Theodora’s mother is Magister Origen, a local judge, persuades her to marry Samuel, a candidate for her late husbands bear-keeper post.

Magister Origen, is not all he seems to be, and unscrupulous motives when he offers to have Theodora and her sister Comito, brought before a dancing master Asterius. When the harsh reality of Origen’s intentions, and the full truth of Theodora and her sister exact life lay before her, she takes matters into her own hands. Setting her and the rest of her family again into another dire situation. Her insightful mother, Maximina, takes desperate measures, in an emotional act of bravery, she seeks atonement for her family.

Burton, delivers a vividly descriptive, interesting, and well-written read here with characters and a setting that totally captivated and intrigued me. I was totally taken and fascinated with both Theodora and her rise from a lower station in a very rigid class system. With exceptional narration the author brings to life through these wonderful pages one of the most Iconic Roman Empress of The Byzantine Era.

Richly detailed, with seamless prose, Theodora’s character and her life is meticulously written to engage and enlighten the reader. Well developed sub-character are notable and intriguing, that bring incredible depth to this historical fiction. Staying close to historical and political events during this era, the author brings the desperation, struggles and strength of Theodora, to life. There are some early, riveting turns of events that change the main protagonist life. Some are gut wrenching, but also you see her true resilient capabilities.

Exquisite atmospheric scenes catapults the reader to Constantinople during the Byzantine Empire. Burton’s strong narration caries you through the early years of one of the most incredible woman in history.

The author strategically sets up the ending to allow for a stunning continuation. I am excited to see how Theodora’s character is further developed and this vibrant and intriguing storyline unfolds.

I definitely recommend this stunning historical fiction to my family and friends.

An enjoyable historical romance, with a lots of adventure, twists and drama.

About an Earl has an interesting main male protagonist, that I completely fell for, a wounded virgin hero, Oliver Chalford, the next Earl of Winchcombe.

A sassy American colonist, Julianna (Jewel) Latham, has been sent to London to visit her aunt and uncle. Sent away by her father, and from the boiling tension within Boston between the colonials and the redcoats. Time away also might help to escape some poor past choices that ultimately led to a broken heart.

Named lord Scar by the ton, A reclusive, bearing a disfigurement from his horrific father, Oliver has found away to do estate business by strictly by post.

Oliver and his twin Penry attend a masquerade party, and when a series of events happen. Along with a compromising situation, this were the book ignites with a fast paced creative storyline, I completely inhaled. When a threat to discredit Oliver’s sanity along with Jewel’s odd banishment, her fathers arrest in states, and some intriguing findings. Things really take on a different perspective as clues fall into place in this splendid fast read. I enjoyed the sweet chemistry between the main characters.

I look forward to reading more in this series.

Anne-Wynn Hopringle, the second of 3 daughters with the first name Anne,A lovely tale of friendship with unlikely well developed captivating heroes. I was completely immersed in this creative fantasy. The author prose flows seamlessly, and the lush atmospheric magical imagery catapults you into these stunning pages.

An easy to follow plot line that has two meticulously woven stories, that comes together perfectly at the end. I absolutely loved the chapters of Deablin.

This spellbinding book that held my attention all the way through, and I am patiently waiting to read the next from this very talented author.

As you can tell, I highly recommend this incredible book to my family and friends!

The Story of Smailholm

Let me tell you a story…

Two years ago, almost to the day, my dad died. It wasn’t a particularly unusual death or the least bit unexpected. Having experienced the death of my mum 15 years earlier, it was just another part of the relentless crawl of time, another deafening tick on the clock of life. After all, the older we get the more that changes. It is, at its very simplest form, just a mathematical equation. The science of time. To the uninitiated into the mind of Claire Lesley Williams, this could be a mighty depressing introduction to how I began writing a novel. I write fantasy so perhaps you’ll indulge me in a bit of darkness. And, also let me explain. With every one of those ticks comes a gift. The gift my dad’s death gave me is Smailholm. Smailholm isn’t about him, but he’s a part of it; his life indelibly inked on the black letters of white page.

Sometimes it takes a breath snatching change to make you do something different. Hell, in your mid 40s you need a push. And so, losing my Dad was my push to start writing the book I’d always wanted to write but never quite believed I could. Two years later, those black letters on a white page represent my tick on the clock of life. It’s been the privilege of my life to create it and share it with you all. I hope you love its fun, adventurous spirit, dusted with magic. It very much represents me – from the battlements of the Scottish Tower I stood upon, looking over a forbidden moor, hoping the wild wind would blast away my grief. To the ingenious mining quogs of Rubers Law that represent my childhood growing up in the industrial Potteries. And finally, to the miniature village of Smailholm itself, the comforting echo from my past. Those perfectly formed villages, yet in miniature that dot the seaside towns of Britain hoping to pull in the odd punter for a pound.

So, kneel down, peer into those little windows and wonder. What do you see?  Is it a crackling fire and pint of frothy ale? Or a tiny woman singing a song about baking buns? Or even a fearless girl with a bow and arrow?

Hi friends! I’m here today to share my review on a book that has pleasantly surprised me.

This new Fantasy novel is set in modern day Japan, and follows our heroine, Kira Fujikawa. She works in the afternoons as a miko, a shrine maiden at her family’s Shinto shrine. Her grandfather runs the shrine and is take his place when she comes of age.

She attends a prestigious Kogakkan Academy in Kyoto, Japan, on a scholarship.Kira longs for her peer acceptance, she treated as outsider because of her family’s status. And oh by the way she sees Yolai, class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons, that have haunted Japan since time immemorial. Not all the Yokai have evil intent, but the description are wonderfully creepy.

“She looks like a scream made flesh.”

Yes, it’s a stellar fantasy that embraces Japanese mythology and a lot of manga. There is also something more to this creative fantasy, it’s the depth and development of the character, Kira, as she her story unfolds. Her growth is depicted in symbolically within the storyline. Realizing her strength, and coming into her own with much needed unexpected help.

Japanese folklore and Kurosawa’s are perfectly blended in this mesmerizing retelling of an old, classic film by Akira Kurosawa, Seven Samurai, add a little Anime, and you have the perfect combination. A breathtaking fantasy exploration outside western culture.

Easy to follow seamless narration with intriguing world building that is incredibly vibrant. I especially enjoyed the glossary that is added to the back of the book, I usually research on my own when presented with mythology from other cultures. So, this was a added bonus for me.

Courtney Alameda

A veteran bookseller and librarian, Courtney Alameda now spends her days writing thriller and horror novels for young people. Valynne E. Maetani (pronounced Vuh-lin Mah-eh-tah-nee) grew up in Utah and obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In a former life, she was a project manager and developed educational software for children with learning disabilities. Currently, she is a full-time writer. She is a member of the We Need Diverse Books team and is dedicated to promoting diversity in children’s literature because every child should grow up believing his or her story deserves to be told. This lovely book is set in the 1920s, after the Great War, WWI, vivacious Prue, is the middle sister. Prue finds herself like most young woman during this era, wanting to throw off the restrictions from the Victorian era, to embrace the modern times of the roaring 20s. Everyone one is not so excepting in this new found freedom that a lot of woman were exhibiting during this time period.

Society still judged woman, and double standards were in place. Traveling first to India, they enjoy all wonderful experiences this country has to offer. But, civil unrest brewing in the streets and some heated family drama, Prue and her Grandmother do what they can to make their extended holiday as pleasant as possible. In a series of events things change and Prue is left feeling heartbroken and at a loss. The two ladies travel onto Italy in their quest for delights.

Single and unattached, Brandon Forster, has survived the war with his inseparable friend, Vincent. Together they have tried to put the past behind them, seeking out adventures and entertainment by way of carousing and rock climbing.

When Brandon and Prue meet there is no denying the sparks are flying.

What an enchanted read this was. I really enjoyed this wonderful beguilingly book. Pace was brisk and writing was fluid, with lovely characters and a captivating protagonist. You definitely don’t want to miss this treasure of a book!

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this delightful series.

Walsingham’s ruthless zeal to counter any uprise of Catholicism, sanctioned the torture and killings of Catholic priests and any who were suspected conspirators.

Walsingham knows the might of Spain and the growing influence of the Catholic League in France, and the continuous threat to the Queen Elizabeth herself, and the stability of her state. Walsingham, directs William Constable and John Foxe, with the task of deciphering aromatic text and the meaning of the star charts depicted on and around and ornate decorated box.

John Foxe is a notable English historian and martyrologist, renowned author of Actes and Monuments. A horrific detailed accounts of the entire history of persecution in the church up until the mid 1550’s, starting with Jesus.

Paired together by Walsingham, this unlikely duo form a warm and kindred friendship. Working together they are tasked to uncover a plot to discredit the Queen and to divide the nation.

Together they uncover a treasonous plot of conspirators that claims Queen Elizabeth has illegitimate child. This would be disastrous to Protestants and the Queen, but would be critical for Roman Catholic sympathizers, who could be use it to spear head a revolution.

As this suspenseful novel takes off, I was immediately intrigued and completely immersed in this complex, political and captivating historical drama.

Paul Walker, masterly sets this absorbing character driven plot line with just enough amount of tension and mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The incredible dialogue of this story should be noted upfront, it really is amazing! I really enjoyed the rich, descriptive language that is realistic to the time period. The prose is seamless, and eloquent, allowing me, as a reader, to feel like I was alongside the main protagonist, William Constable

The supporting characters are just as well developed and fleshed out and very interesting. Constable is wonderful character who is sympathetic to his mother and show empathy toward his fellow man. The budding romance makes for added depth to this book. I look forward to reading more developed in next book.

I really enjoyed the authors creative invention of the shadow staff, a ships navigation device, that coincides with development of this time period. Creative invention were being developed, in response for the increasing push toward exploration.

Overall this was engaging book, with brilliant executed narration was brilliant. I loved the way the plot unfolded. I was completely invested in the storyline.

This stunning, atmospheric historical fiction with the most illustrious characters, coded messages, espionage, and star charts made for a riveting read.

About the Author

Paul Walker inherited his love of British history and historical fiction from his mother who was an active member of the Richard III Society.

State of Treason is the first in a planned series of Elizabethan spy thrillers. The plot is based around real characters and events in London of the 1570s. The hero, William Constable, is an astrologer and also a skeptic. He is also a mathematician, astronomer and inventor of a navigational aid for ships. The distinction between astrology and astronomy was blurred in the sixteenth century.

The second book in the series, A Necessary Killing, was published in November 2019.

Paul is married and lives in a village 30 miles north of London. His writing is regularly disrupted by children and a growing number of grandchildren and dogs.

Book II: Days of Sun and Glory

Adam de Guirande has barely survived the aftermath of Roger Mortimer’s rebellion in 1321. Book III: Under the Approaching Dark

Adam de Guirande has cause to believe the turbulent times are behind him: Hugh Despenser is dead and Edward II is forced to abdicate in favour of his young son. England in the early months of 1327 is a country in need of stability, and many turn with hope towards the new young king, Edward III. Book IV: The Cold Light of Dawn

After Henry of Lancaster’s rebellion has been crushed early in 1329, a restless peace settles over England. However, the young Edward III is no longer content with being his regents’ puppet, no matter that neither Queen Isabella nor Roger Mortimer show any inclination to give up their power. Caught in between is Adam de Guirande, torn between his loyalty to the young king and that to his former lord, Roger Mortimer.

Edward III is growing up fast. No longer a boy to be manipulated, he resents the power of his mother, Queen Isabella, and Mortimer. His regents show little inclination of handing over their power to him, the rightful king, and Edward suspects they never will unless he forces their hand.

Adam de Guirande is first and foremost Edward’s man, and he too is of the opinion that the young king is capable of ruling on his own. But for Adam siding with his king causes heartache, as he still loves Roger Mortimer, the man who shaped him into who he is.

Inevitably, Edward and his regents march towards a final confrontation. And there is nothing Adam can do but pray and hope that somehow things will work out. Unfortunately, prayers don’t always help.

About the Author

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with three absorbing interests: history and writing.

The Little Bookshop on the Seine” is a delightful book, that was I was totally immersed in. A captivating, wonderful written heartwarming book. One that is perfect for curling up with a cozy blanket on a cold winters night.

A lighthearted read about a young woman who, for six months, exchanges working in her own bookshop in Ashford in Connecticut for the ‘Once Upon a Time’ bookshop situated near the River Seine in Paris. She finds that she has taken on more than she bargained for. The authors ability to create a compelling storyline, that grabbed my attention, and held it all the way through.

Heartwarming and memorable characters adds to this enjoyable storyline. Be prepared to get lost in the whimsical and ageless beauty of Paris as author Rebecca Raisin beautifully captures the hearts and haunts of one of the worlds most magical cities.

Q&A with Rebecca Raisin

Q: Have you ever been to Paris?

If so, what are some of your favorite Parisian things?

A: I’ve been lucky enough to go Paris four times and do a bit of exploring for the books. It’s my favourite city in the world and if I could up and move I’d do it! I love the bookshops of Paris, particularly the secondhand shops that are dusty and musty and disorderly. You never know what you’ll find and that makes it magical. If you’re in Paris find the Abbey Bookshop, it’s full to bursting with English books and it’s a treasure trove if you have time to hunt! I also love French food – who doesn’t?! My favourite place to eat is the Christian Constant bistros. He has one for every budget and they’re all glorious. If you splurge once, I highly recommend it’s there.

The Ritz is also a must-see, from Bar Hemingway to Salon Proust, it’s an experience like no other walking in the footsteps of those literary greats. Buly 1803 is the most beautiful perfume shop in all the world, it’s like stepping back in time. My favourite is the rose oil… ooh la la. And holding a special place in my heart is Point Zero Paris, the exact centre of the city and a place where magic happens – you’ll have to read the book to find out more…

Q: What authors were/are a huge influence on you as you began writing?

Or Now?

A: I have always loved Maeve Binchy and Joanne Harris and the style in which they write. I love Maeve’s ability to write everyday relatable characters, and I love Joanne’s sense of whimsy. I love writing foodie books set in exotic locations and I think I probably fell in love with France through Joanne’s books, they managed to transport me fully and I must’ve reread them a hundred times by now.

Q: What’s some of your favorite novels? What are you currently reading and what’s on your TBR (to be read) list?

A: I loved Me Before You. I cried ugly, ugly tears at that. I must be a sucker for punishment because my all time favourite is The Fault in Our Stars. And also Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance. Three books that you need to read in the privacy of your own home with some cucumber slices to apply after for puffy eyes! I’m currently reading the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley, so a nice change of pace from sobbing my heart out. I love how different each sister is and how you still find common ground with them.

Q: What inspired you to write your The Little Bookshop on the Siene?

A: My love of Paris and its bookshops! And truthfully, I wangled the family there so I could do some ‘research’ which included eating my body weight in macarons and walking until I couldn’t feel my feet anymore and feeling that I was a little bit French on the inside if only the locals could see that!

Q: What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

A: I hope you do something reckless, something that scares you, jump out of that comfort zone and do that thing you’ve always dreamed of! What’s stopping you – fear, money, work, life? You can make it happen if only you take the plunge! Open yourself to new experiences and people and don’t take the taxi, walk until your feet are numb and find those lost laneways and hidden alleys and see what you find!

Q: What drew you into this particular genre?

A: I love love, but Little Bookshop is also about another kind of love, the love of a place, or a feeling…writing this genre leaves it open to interpretation and anything goes as long you tie it all up at the end in a satisfying way!

Q: If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

A: I’d sit down with bookworm Sarah and ask her what she really thought of Luiz…

I am still conflicted about that thread and what I could have done but didn’t!

Q: What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

A: They’ve all been good in different ways but I’d say Facebook is my favourite. I have a great group of people who follow me there and really interact. It’s a nice place to stop and chat and they’re all really lovely. Instagram is good too. I love how creative book bloggers are with their photos, they’re very inspiring to me.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

A: I’ve said this before and it’s really this simple. Write every day. I think it was Stephen King who said writing is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets and it’s true! Carve out a time and stick to it.

Q: What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

A: I’m currently editing Aria’s Travelling Bookshop, which is about a Van Lifer who sells her wares as she explores France! (Are you detecting a pattern here!?) It’s the follow up to Rosie’s Travelling Tea Shop, which was released last March. Both books are about a different way of living, about having less but gaining more as you go. I’ve loved writing Rosie and Aria!
