Synopsis

A gothic YA fantasy debut about a young woman striving to break her sister’s curse and stop the killing in her small French town

Seventeen-year-old Marie mixes perfumes to sell on market day in her small eighteenth-century French town. She wants to make enough to save a dowry for her sister, Ama, in hopes of Ama marrying well and Marie living in the level of freedom afforded only to spinster aunts. But her perfumes are more than sweet scents in cheap, cut-glass bottles: A certain few are laced with death. Marie laces the perfume delicately—not with poison but with a hint of honeysuckle she’s trained her sister to respond to. Marie marks her victim, and Ama attacks. But she doesn’t attack as a girl. She kills as a beast.

Marking Ama’s victims controls the damage to keep suspicion at bay. But when a young boy turns up dead one morning, Marie is forced to acknowledge she might be losing control of Ama. And if she can’t control her, she’ll have to cure her. Marie knows the only place she’ll find the cure is in the mansion where Ama was cursed in the first place, home of Lord Sebastien LeClaire. But once she gets into the mansion, she discovers dark secrets hidden away—secrets of the curse, of Lord Sebastien . . . and of herself.

REVIEW

From the desk of Gwendalyn Anderson

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

Stalking Shadows by Cyla Panin is a tantalizing eerie gothic tale.

Eighteen century France, two sisters live in an isolated village. Marie and Ama make their living selling perfumes made by aromatic flowers and plants. Having lost their mother and their useless father has gone to drink. Shunned by local villagers for their strange ways, they guard a deadly howling secret.

Incredible atmospheric world building, along with a gorgeous old world setting makes this YA Fantasy standout. Let’s not forget the true heart of the storyline is the bond and love the two sisters have for one another.

A darkish twisted book, that made for the perfect escapism, I devoured in one day. Ominous and deliciously grim with moral grey characters through out its pages. Steeped in superstition, along with a slow burn romance, this is one book that will catapult you into dark forests, a crumbling manor house, along with a hint of witchcraft…. Exceptional!

“ Sometimes She smells like blood. It stained her, worming into her pores and spreading out under her skin.

Synopsis

London, 1885

Amelie Hampton is a hopeless romantic, which makes her the perfect columnist to answer lonely heart letters in The Marriage Gazette. When Amelie plays matchmaker with two anonymous lonely hearts, she also decides to secretly observe the couple’s blind date. To her surprise, the man who appears for the rendezvous is Harold Radcliffe―a grieving widower and a member of Amelie’s book club.

Police detective Michael Baker has been struggling ever since his best friend and brother-in-law died in the line of fire. Because he knows the dangers of his job, he has vowed never to marry and subject a wife and family to the uncertainty of his profession. But when he meets Miss Hampton, he is captured by her innocence, beauty, and her quick mind.

When a woman’s body is pulled from the river, Michael suspects the woman’s husband―Harold Radcliffe―of foul play. Amelie refuses to believe that Harold is capable of such violence but agrees to help, imagining it will be like one of her favorite mystery novels. Her social connections and clever observations prove an asset to the case, and Amelie is determined to prove Mr. Radcliffe’s innocence. But the more time Amelie and Michael spend together, the more they trust each other, and the more they realize they are a good team, maybe the perfect match.

They also realize that Mr. Radcliffe is hiding more than one secret, and when his attention turns toward Amelie, Michael knows he must put an end to this case before the woman he loves comes to harm.

🤎🤎🤎

The Matchmakers lonely Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen, Is a delightful Victorian Proper Romance® that brings the perfect amount of suspense and a slow burn romance.

Victorian London we follow Amelia Hampton, a somewhat naive young woman who is trying to be a success columnis. She truly believes in romance, and marring for love. She struggles with the notion that their are those people who don’t always have the best intentions. Needless to say one in particular that is a charming member of a book club she attends. In a series of events she crosses path with Michael Baker, a detective heading an investigation involving the dashing book club member, Mr. Radcliffe. As the storyline unfolds the two are on opposites sides in this engaging clean romance. The more they find themselves together the more their working relationship becomes something much more. Amelia finds herself drawn to the captivating Radcliffe, and the nonchalant detective Michael Baker.

Which one is being honest with his true intentions toward this optimistic young lady?

The Matchmaker’s Lonely Heart by Nancy Campbell Allen is a engaging historical romantic, with light suspense to keep you turning those pages. I loved the characters and thought they were well developed. Our leading lady’s growth was wonderful to watch. I thought the pace was brisk and I was immersed within story. As a reader you will enjoy Amelia’s struggle with wanting to be free of the restraints that were placed on women during this era. The light romance was well depicted and loved watching it unfold.

A perfect proper romance to be sure, with just enough suspense to keep the reader on their toes!
