A compelling character driven story, that examines the turbulent times in France.

We follow Hélène d’Aubign as she recounts her life before prison and the dreaded guillotine. A daughter of a Marquis, Hélène is a part of the aristocracy that the revolution saw to take down. Hélène innocent voice is strong and her character depiction is perfect for this time in history.

We witness the mob mentality that was stirred by personal gains of some of the monarchy that used common peasants as way to gain power. In an unflinching narration the author gives you insight into this chaotic drama. Hélène see the need for change she is accused of being a spy and wrongly imprisoned. The storyline weaves back and forth from her reflection inside her prison cell, to the events leading up to her arrest.

This is a realistic tale of love and sacrifices. A riveting meticulous researched tale, that catapults the reader into the lives of a young adult woman. As her family is torn apart and fleeing for their lives and a heart wrenching tale of loss love. Family secrets that unravel as the reader is drawn deeper into the book. Lindsay Bandy writing was everything that I hoped it would be. Her historical details and well developed characters masterly come to life.

This is superbly, executed novel, and a powerful rewarding read. That I highly recommended.
