Dreamland

Publication Date: January 16, 2020
Endeavor Quill
eBook & Paperback; 386 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

The year is 1911 when twenty-year-old heiress Peggy Batternberg is invited to spend the summer in America’s Playground.

But the invitation to Coney Island is unwelcome. Despite hailing from one of America’s richest families, Peggy would much rather spend the summer at the Moonrise Bookstore where she works voluntarily, than keeping up appearances with Brooklyn socialites and her snobbish, controlling family.

But soon it transpires that the hedonism of Coney Island affords Peggy more of the freedom she has been longing for. For one, she finds herself in love with a troubled pier-side artist of humble means, whom the Batternberg patriarchs would surely disapprove of.

Disapprove they may, but hidden behind their pomposity lurks a web of deceit, betrayal and deadly secrets. And as bodies begin to mount up amidst the sweltering clamour of Coney Island, it seems the powerful Batternbergs can get away with anything…even murder.s

It is up to Peggy to overcome the oppression of her family and clear the name of her vulnerable lover, before she or her beloved sister become the next victims of Dreamland.

Extravagant, intoxicating and thumping with suspense, bestselling Nancy Bilyeau’s magnificent Dreamland is a story of corruption, class and dangerous obsession.

‘Nancy Bilyeau’s passion for history infuses her books Alison Weir

1. What does the title mean?

It’s the literal name of an amusement park in Coney Island, opened in 1904. That’s where my main character finds herself in the early part of the book and meets one person who changes her life dramatically but she meets other important people there too. However, it has another meaning: some of the main characters are in a dream when it comes to functioning in the world. The dream can be a pleasant one, or a dangerous one.

2. Tell us a little about your story and the story world you’ve created.

It’s New York City, 1911, and rebellious young heiress Peggy Batternberg reluctantly accompanies her family for a holiday at the luxurious Oriental Hotel, on the Atlantic Ocean. But less than a mile away, Coney Island, “America’s Playground,” beckons with forbidden delight — and danger for Peggy and those she loves most.

3. Tell us a little about how this story first came to be. Did it start with an image, a voice, a concept, a dilemma or something else?

When I was researching Coney Island for a nonfiction story assignment I found a video clip on youtube that showed the hundreds of thousands of amusement-park electric lights twinkling at night, reflecting in the Atlantic Ocean. It was spine-tingling and magical and I thought I would like to set a novel there.

4. Are any of your characters based on real people you know?

The Batternberg family behavior was based in part on two wealthy families I have had the opportunity to observe. 😊 Several characters are closely based on real people but none I knew personally.

5. Which character was most challenging to create? Why?

Stefan was challenging. I’m comfortable writing artists as characters—my father was a watercolor landscape artist. His Serbian background meant I needed to do extra research to get him right. I read a few books and watched documentaries. Rebecca West’s book ‘Black Lamb and Grey Falcon’ helped a lot. Also I worked on a website with a Macedonian woman, that gave me some insight. I went to a Serbian restaurant on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and she texted me what to order.

6. What did you learn while writing the book?

I learned how to create a special world set in another time and to write a main character who reacts to that world in a way that pulls in the reader.

7. Were you a young writer, a late bloomer, or something in between?

I knew I wanted to be a writer at the age of 8. My third grade teacher announced that I described the trees and leaves well in an assignment following a field trip.   I wrote poems and stories in school, and when I went to college I wrote for the newspaper—it was The Michigan Daily at the University of Michigan. After graduation, I was a journalist and then an editor at newspapers and magazines. But I didn’t start writing screenplays and novels until I was in my early 40s and I had a family. So I’m both a young writer AND a late bloomer.

8. Do you have a dedicated writing space? I wish! I write at the kitchen table, on the couch, sitting up in bed, at the public library, or in a corner of Starbucks.

9. Any type of writing ritual you have? When I’m in the most important creation stage, coming up with characters and plot points, I like to get up before dawn and write quickly, letting my subconscious take a lead role.

10. Do you write in silence or with Music? In the latter part of writing a novel, I use music a lot. I actually follow certain film composers because their creations for films usually are meant to tell an emotional story. Depending on the mood I’m writing, I turn to Bernard Herrmann(Hitchcock’s favorite), Trevor Jones or Wojciech Kilar. If you haven’t listened to Kilar’s score for the film “The Ninth Gate,” I urge you to do so. But also with ‘The Blue’ I listened to a lot of Beethoven. For ‘Dreamland,’ it was Camille Saint-Saens.

11. What is your favorite genre to read, and why? Historical Fiction was my first love and while I enjoy mysteries and women’s fiction and a bit of horror, stories set in the past are the most rewarding to me, the most fascinating.

12. Are you working on something new at the moment? Can you share any details? I’m interested in writing another book set in this same time, the end of the Gilded Age.

#Review

Have you been to America’s Playground? Coney Island?

I’ve always wanted to visit.

Dreamland has Coney Island as a backdrop, and it’s 1911.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

Dreamland is a suspenseful historical fiction of obsession and desire.

This fascinating portrait of the end of the Gilded Age was a fabulous start to 2020. Set in New York 1911, the Battenberg family are one of the richest in America, with the Vanderbilts and Rockerfellas,

Peggy Battenberg is a young heiress who struggles against the bonds of societal restrictions placed on women of her class. Peggy, against her families wishes takes a job at the Moonrise Bookstore, and lives with her ex teacher. When her family intervenes, and she is told that she is required to take a summer vacation at the Oriental Hotel, a once-grand oceanfront resort on Coney Island. For the sake of her sister Lydia, who is engaged to the rich Henry Taul, Peggy succumbs to her family’s wishes.

Nancy Bilyeau’s writing catapults you into this vibrant outstanding thriller set in end of Gilded Age. Dreamland is a splendid, intoxicating book, with plenty of multi layered suspense.

Nancy Bilyeau delivers an extremely entertaining storyline, with captivating underlying tension. This gripping, perfectly paced and well-written read here that I absolutely loved how seamlessly and cleverly written this story was, and thought the author did a fabulous job with the delivery. I was totally invested all the way through to the satisfying end.

Dreamland and the rest of Coney Island is an intoxicating, hedonistic and full of life. Peggy gets to experience life from a completely different perspective than she has ever before. Mixing with artists, dancers, the inhabitants of Lilliput, along with food vendors. There is also a sinister side to this plot line, that adds an intriguing twist to the book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Scandal and intrigue along with family drama makes for an extraordinary thought-provoking novel. A fabulous mystery/thriller that I was immediately drawn into and devoured quickly.

Foul Is Fair Book Tour

Foul Is Fair

(Foul Is Fair #1)

Hannah Capin’s Foul is Fair is a bloody, thrilling revenge fantasy for the girls who have had enough. Golden boys beware: something wicked this way comes.

Jade and her friends Jenny, Mads, and Summer rule their glittering LA circle. Untouchable, they have the kind of power other girls only dream of. Every party is theirs and the world is at their feet. Until the night of Jade’s sweet sixteen, when they crash a St. Andrew’s Prep party. The night the golden boys choose Jade as their next target.

They picked the wrong girl.

Sworn to vengeance, Jade transfers to St. Andrew’s Prep. She plots to destroy each boy, one by one. She’ll take their power, their lives, and their control of the prep school’s hierarchy. And she and her coven have the perfect way in: a boy named Mack, whose ambition could turn deadly.

A reminder to all, You should not be silenced. But vengeance is has its ultimate consequences.

An unapologetic modernized, MacBeth retelling a dark tale of revenge and tragedy set at a California prep school. Foul and Fair takes its ruthless inspirational revenge from iShakespeare’s Macbeth, positioning Elle’s friends as the three witches, Elle assumes the role as that of Lady Macbeth, and Mack as Macbeth. Rather than convincing him to kill out of ambition, though, Elle convinces him he is killing out of righteousness.  Elle’s murderous rage slashes through the entire book.

Ruthless with a heavy dose of lyrical writing. Foul is Fair offers an unapologetic modernized MacBeth retelling. A ruthless, absolute carnage of an avenging story that centers on a dark bond between friends, and how far they’re willing to go for one another. A reminder to all, we will not should not be silenced.

A dark and bloody retelling of Macbeth at a relentless pace all the way to its violent crashing ending

When they crash a party at St. Andrew’s Preparatory School to celebrate Elle’s sweet sixteen, the golden boys on the lacrosse team separate Elle from her pack, like so many wolves on the hunt. Duncan, king/captain, singles Elle out for slaughter; his younger brother, Malcolm, slips Rohypnol into her drink; and Porter guards the door while teammates Duncan, Duffy, Connor, and Banks take turns raping her. Duffy’s on-again, off-again girlfriend Piper witnesses the assault, but does nothing to stop it.

This is only the beginning, this book is not for the faint of heart. Please understand this novels examination of ones self-destructive power through vengeance.

What they will find, after they leave their moral compass at the door, is a steadfast sisterhood. This devastating and emotionally charged intense book is ultimately finding the strength and rising above being a victim. It also sheds a the light on being a vigilante has its moral and mental consequences to us all.

A dark and bloody retelling of Macbeth at a relentless pace all the way to its violent crashing ending

Trigger warning for violence against women, including rape and domestic abuse, as well as murder and suicide

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice, Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth is a thrilling fantasy for fans of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series.
She will reign.

The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.
When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.
But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.

Thank you to FFBC and Imprint Reads for providing me with an ARC of this book. Some parts may have been changed as I did not read the final book. Please know that all of the expressed thoughts are my honest opinions.

This first installment in a high-stakes adventure, duology, that was a spectacular read. Readers of YA fantasy looking to enjoy a unique magic system will enjoy reading about Visida’s diverse magic.

All The Stars And Teeth, is phenomenal young adult epic fantasy, with a fierce princess who teams up with a pirate, and a intriguing cast of crew members, in order to save her kingdom from a dangerous new threat of destructive new magic. A tale of the bonds of friendship and the strength to never give up.

Adalyn Grace’s writing completely blew me away, It hooked me right from the first pages into this epic fantasy with vivid imagery, and well developed cast of characters.

A tale full of pirates, soul magic wielding princesses, and furious mermaid, seven distinctive unique magic systems, and an expansive fantasy world.

This was a wonderful fast paced story with everything I could hope for and more!

A bones and teeth, edge of your seat thrill ride fantasy. I loved every minute of this tale, while gripping the edges of my seat the entire time. I was completely immersed in this engaging, tension filled book.

Exceptional world building, the author has really created something special with this tale. The writing pulls you in from page one and keeps you fully captivated and intrigued until the very end…and oh what an incredible ending, leaving you wanting more.

Amora Montara, princess of Visidia, has been training in magic her whole life to take over her father’s throne. Amora Montara, and her family possess soul magic. Besides being able to see someone’s soul..she can use hair and or blood from a person to bond them to a bone. ..this definitely is where the magical elements in this book are more darkish then most ya fantasies.

All she has to do is one demonstration of her ability to use this magic and she will ascend to the throne. But after her demonstration goes horribly awry, she seeks other ways to ascend to the throne.

Joining forces with, Bastian, the rakish mysterious pirate, who saves Amora, along with Ferrick, Amora’s fiancé, a mermaid siren who helps navigate through the cursed waters after they rescue her.

As they journey through the kingdom of Visidia, Amora and her friends go through they encounter monsters, magic, and danger around every Corner. There are seven islands in the kingdom, and each island is practicing one kind of magic. While every

person in Visidia is only able to to learn one kind of magic, or else a curse would befall the kingdom. We only visited four of these islands in this book, I’m excited to see where the next book in this dualogy will bring us.

One of my favorite characters is the Mermaid.

The only mermaids I love are the ones that lure men to the death bed, with in with their songs. Vataea, is by far my favorite character a stellar vicious mermaid who quickly displays that there’s more to her than her looks to her. She is badass, treacherous and does whatever it takes to survive. I absolutely loved her and she is queer also.

Exceptional representation of close bonded camarades adds depth and memorable dynamics. Facing dangerous circumstances and high seas adventures, with incredible dark magical elements makes this a stunning read .

Overall, if you love an emotionally charged dark fantasy wrought with incredible world building, magick, unlike no other ya fantasy.

Some of my favorite Quotes:

It’s not too late for us; we are not the mistakes of our family. We have the opportunity to change Visidia for the better.

“we’ve shared an experience only a few people will understand, and it’s marked our souls. the sea is a beast more fearsome than even the lusca.”

“fear is part of life; all that matters is what we do with it.”

Adalyn Grace graduated Summa Cum Laude when she was 19-years-old. She spent four years working in live theater, and acted as the managing editor of a nonprofit newspaper. During and after college, she studied storytelling as an intern on Nickelodeon Animation’s popular animated show, The Legend of Korra (sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender). She was a participant in Pitch Wars 2016, and is a former literary agent intern for an established agency.
Adalyn splits time between San Diego and Arizona with her bossy cat and two dorky dogs, and spends her days writing full time while trying to find the city’s best burrito.
She has several projects in the works, and hopes to continually push the boundaries and explore the limits of upper young adult fiction.

I fell completely in love with his writing style, and his captivating story from the very first opening pages. His delightful three dimensional fleshed out characters that Captured my heart.

The storyline is engaging with the perfect amount of delightful romance. Superb comic timing and witty banter adds some of the best content to any historical romance I have read in a long time. I found myself laughing out loud several times.

Quick paced and intriguing plot line kept me interested and glued to the pages all the way through to the heartwarming satisfying end.

I definitely will recommend this incredible romantic story to anyone who enjoys the perfect historical romance.

About the Author

After self-publishing science fiction novels over a period of years, I made the truly odd move into historical romance. Although romance is a strong thread in nearly all my works, I came to straight-up, nothing-but-romance only after turning fifty. Since then, I am plagued by the question, “What took me so long?” My awakening began rather innocuously when I casually watched the 2015 version of Poldark. Before I knew, I was falling headlong into the abyss of historical romance and read fifteen such novels over a three-month span. However, no number could sufficiently scratch my itch for more, so I did what any writer would do and began constructing stories of my own. In April of 2019, I received my first contract with Entangled Publishing.

“Hope was a dangerous thing. It could consume every dream and make them take flight, becoming wild daydreams in one’s heart and mind. Or hope could incinerate everything you thought you knew, burning you down to your core, leaving you raw and exposed for the world. As Brokk walked down the hallway, looking for Memphis, his world was ripped apart in a split second. The hallways were quiet, which should have been his first sign that something was off. Class had just ended for the afternoon, and like every other day, Brokk’s blood was boiling after seeing Iasan. His teacher had become predatory toward him, trying to push him to his edge but always in ways only noticed to Brokk, putting on the persona for the other teachers. Iasan was only trying to ensure a bright future, they said. By grooming him into a lethal weapon that would kill on command. Swearing under his breath, Brokk was hoping for the blissful distraction that the hallways of the Academy always provided. His fellow classmates had a flair for the dramatics; it was guaranteed he would be swept away in their display, along with his thoughts. Instead, his footsteps echoed as he continued on, dread pooling in his stomach and making it churn. Turning the corner, he was about to stop and go back when he saw him. Crumpled in the middle of the hallway, his blond hair splayed out around him and his skin drained of any color, he looked dead. Alby’s appearance flickered as he turned invisible in a panic. “What happened?!” Brokk’s voice cracked, as he sprinted, dropping to his best friend’s side in an instant. Alby’s eyes were wide, as he grappled with his words, his mouth opening and closing. Brokk urged, “Alby, what happened?” The doors at the end of the hallway were thrown open, and Brokk stood, slowly taking in the group rushing toward them. Roque stormed down the hall, Nei and Bresslin at his heels, Tadeas and his entourage flanking them. Roque looked at them, narrowing his eyes to slits. “Foster! What are you doing here? I told the teachers to issue a temporary room curfew effective immediately.” Roque’s words were just white noise, as Brokk saw Adair filing slowly in at the end of the hallway, looking like he had just been through a war. “Foster, I suggest you answer the question,” Roque spoke quietly and slowly, and Brokk flicked his gaze up to the man for a second, truly taking him in. And what Brokk saw, for the first time in years, scared him. Rage contorted their leader’s features into one unrecognizable. One that consumed the man and left a person that had nothing left to lose. He took a step back. “I was just looking for Memphis.” Alby cut in, “He did it. Adair used his ability against Memphis.” Brokk barely took in the next couple of seconds. Roque stiffened, turning slowly to look at Adair limping behind them all, his hooded eyes swept down to the floor, not realizing that everyone had focused in on him. He hurt Memphis.”

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

“Years ago there was a girl with an unusual ability. Her name was Emory Fae.”

This captivating Fantasy all begins with a prologue set fifteen years before, that gives the reader a good background and sets the reader up for this engaging fast paced richly texturized fantasy.

Fast forward to fifteen years and this swift movingly storyline unfolds with stunning atmospheric details that I transported to Mallory McCartney imaginable immersive fantasy world.

Wolf: A Novel
by Herbert J. Stern & Alan A. Winter

Publication Date: February 11, 2020
Skyhorse
Hardcover & eBook; 552 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

In the Great Tradition of Herman Wouk, Author of Winds of War and War and Remembrance, Wolf is a Thoroughly Researched and Illustrated Historical Novel about a Man who is Not Yet a Monster . . . but Will Soon Become the Ultimate One: Adolf Hitler.

Perhaps no man on Earth is more controversial, more hated, or more studied than Adolf Hitler. His exploits and every move are well-documented, from the time he first became chancellor and then-dictator of Germany to starting World War II to the systematic killing of millions of Jews. But how did he achieve power, and what was the makeup of the mind of a man who would deliberately inflict unimaginable horrors on millions of people?

Meet Friedrich Richard, an amnesiac soldier who, in 1918, encounters Hitler in the mental ward at Pasewalk Hospital. Hitler, then a corporal, diagnosed as a psychopath and helpless, suffering from hysterical blindness, introduces himself as Wolf to Friedrich and becomes dependent upon Friedrich for assistance, forming an unbreakable bond between the two men.

Follow Friedich—our protagonist—who interacts with real people, places, and events, through the fifteen-year friendship that witnesses Hitler turn from a quiet painter into a megalomaniacal dictator. Using brand-new historical research to construct a realistic portrait of the evolving Hitler, Wolf will satisfy, by turns, history buffs and fiction fans alike. And as this complex story is masterfully presented, it answers the question of how a nondescript man became the worlds greatest monster.

Praise

Adolf Hitler anointed himself with the name, Wolf, then plotted and connived with remorseless determination to become Der Fuhrer, Dictator, Savior of the Fatherland. As in ancient Greek drama, we know the ending to the story.

The riddle is how we get there….A Hitler we did not know existed emerges page by page, A Hitler we did not know existed emerges page by page, all his bits and pieces, certain of his role as Savior of Germany, evil, driven, shrewd, an unrepentant, serial seducer of teenage girls, surrounded by toadies as ruthless as himself but not nearly so smart his rise and words an unnerving parallel as we witness the continued erosion of democracy today in our own sweet land. Put this book on the shelf with Ludlum, Michener, and Clavell. Wolf deserves to be in their company. Stephen Foreman, author of Toehold, Watching Gideon, and Journey, and screenwriter of The Jazz Singer, Hostage, and America the Beautiful

Based on extensive research, the extraordinary novel Wolf, by Herbert J. Stern and Alan A. Winter, lifts the curtain so that the reader can observe through the eyes of a fictional character how a seemingly unremarkable corporal who was denied a promotion for lack of leadership ability became dictator of Germany. The result is a gripping page-turner, a masterful historical novel.”

The Jewish Voice

Wolf offers a front row seat to the Nazi Party early years, expertly using the fictional protagonist Friedrich Richard to take the reader on a fifteen-year journey from the end of the First World War to Adolf Hitlers seizure of absolute power in Germany. The reader experiences the gradual death of democracy in Weimar Germany like a slow-motion train wreck, equally fascinated and horrified. We all know how Hitlers Thousand Year Reich ended, but Wolf shows us how the nightmare began. A compelling, thoroughly researched, and important work. Wolf is an impressive achievement. Exhaustively researched and richly detailed, it draws on new historical research to paint a fascinating portrait of Adolph Hitler that is more human and recognizable than most depictions and thus even more chilling and sobering. Alex DeMille, co-author of The Deserter with bestselling author Nelson DeMille

Wolf will incite intense discussion in historical circles and book clubs alike. It is a poignant, persuasive, and ultimately terrifying story of how one man came to bend the path of history through oppression and genocide by taking one step at a time. Amy Wilhelm, senior writer, Book Club Babble

Thank you to Andrea Stein with Jane Wesman Public Relations and Historical Fiction Virtual Blog Tours for this wonderful opportunity to read a truly amazing novel and review Wolf.

I received an ARC and Historical Notes from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

Herbert Stern and Alan Winter’s Extraordinary Novel Transports Readers to the years in Germany, 1918 to 1934. A reflective personal view of Hitler’s ambitious Rise to Power.

WOLF, by Herbert J. Stern and Alan A. Winter, is a thought provoking novel based on extensive research, a masterpiece of historical fiction that is brings to life the years those critical events between the first WW1 and WW2.

In 1918, a young man wakes up in a German hospital who has a genuine case of amnesia. He has undergone extensive major plastic surgery for shrapnel wounds that he received to his face, head, and body. In time he regains his strength, but his memory continues to elude him. Without documents or any information the hospital refers to him as Patient X. After his transfer to Pasewalk Mental Hospital a doctor assigns him the name of a dead soldier, Friedrich Richard. Shortly after his arrival he meets a fellow patient who Is suffering from conversion disorder or hysterical blindness. This patient becomes dependent on main the protagonist for intimate help with day to day task. He is Adolf Hitler, but his close friends call him, Wolf. Through their ordeal in psychiatric hospital they form a strong bond of friendship, that will carry them through until the reality of what Wolf’s true intentions are when they come to light.

Through Richard’s sixteen year narration we see first hand Germany’s Political turmoil and economic struggles. As critical moments of the crashing death of Germany’s democracy unfolds through these remarkable emotional pages.

Hitler’s extreme anti-Semitic comments were more rhetorical than substance.

I myself never thought he would carry through with his threats.

Friedrich Richard…

An exquisitely written, absorbing read, that I completely inhaled. The novels pace and depth, with its fleshed out historical and fictional characters is both compelling as it is frightening. An astonishing book that captures the true nature of Adolf Hitler, from his charismatic presence and leadership ability. His strength as an Orator that fueled the distain of the common German people as they were struggling under the weight of The Treaty of Versailles. Economic inflation and debts and reparation payments drained the German government This allowed the perfect opportunity for an ambitious leader to rise up and ignite a country with traditional appeal to nationalism, and loyalty to its Fatherland.

This is brilliantly written book, with its atmospheric descriptive details and absorbing narration, will stay with long after you close the book.

A breathtaking novel that gives the reader the opportunity to be front and center in a dark and emotional time during this period of our world’s history.

If you are interested in more of the authors’ meticulous research you can access Historical Notes at http://www.notesonwolf.com/

My thoughts:

Hitler used an extremely detail and impressive, organized plan for economic revitalization of Germany’s economy. Through his method, Hitler was able to keep his promises of strengthening economic growth and begin his ultimate climb to power. Hitler used the Jewish people as a scapegoat for all of Germany’s problems. Germany’s disproportional numbers of wealthy Jewish business owners was a window opportunity for Hitler to convince much of the German people that the Jews were to blame for the poor economic state. As Nazis party slowly infiltrated every aspect of government they were able to convince the masses that the Jews were rich and powerful. The propaganda spewed that they were no better than vermin, and this allowed for necessary to take severe measures to be taken.

Hitler based Aryan purity on America’s One Drop Rule.

German anti-Semites used American anti-miscegenation laws as a model. … In the late 1920s, Adolf Hitler declared in “Mein Kampf” that America was the “one state” making progress toward the creation of a healthy race-based order.

One of the most striking Nazi views was that Jim Crow was a suitable racist program already in use in the United States,

because American blacks were already oppressed and poor,” he says. “But then in Germany, by contrast, where the Jews (as the Nazis imagined it) were rich and powerful, it was necessary to take more severe measures.”

Because of this, Nazis were more interested in how the U.S. had designated Native Americans, Filipinos and other groups as non-citizens even though they lived in the U.S. or its territories. These models influenced the citizenship portion of the Nuremberg Laws, which stripped Jewish Germans of their citizenship and classified them as “nationals.”

I received a gorgeous print arc of this book from the publisher, G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

“It’s alarming, really, how quickly nice people become ravenous, bloodthirsty.”

Melissa de la Cruz

A stunning first novel in the Queen’s Secret series, NYT bestselling author,

Melissa de la Cruz slow burn romance is definitely in the forefront of this Ya fantasy book of magic, assassins, royalty and adventures

The Queen’s Assassin follows both two characters, Shadow and Cal.

Recently called back to court by her Queen, Mother, an independent plucky female protagonist, Shadow has been raised in obscurity living in the countryside with her Aunts. Shadow takes her destiny into her own hands by planning on rescuing the infamous Queen’s Assassin. Headstrong and at times a little immature and definitely inconsistent, she has decided that being a ladys maid is ultimately a pawn.

Caledon father, had sworn a blood-oath to the queen to find the missing Deian Scrolls. The Scrolls are a record of magical history and knowledge, stolen many years ago by a bold and rebellious group, called the Aphrasians. Dying without completely his task, the blood oath is than transferred to his son, Caledon {Cal}.

Shouldering this heavy burden, Cal is desperate to find the magical scrolls, and finally began his life.

By Freeing Caledon ‘Cal’ Holt from the prisons of Deersia, they might put a stop to those trying to destroy the kingdom of Renovia.

Cal’s path is to find conspirator against the crown and find the hidden magic scrolls that will return magic to all the common people. The journey is treacherous and dangerous, along the way it brings the two young people closer together.

As Cal and Shadow’s growing relationship starts to bud, they soon uncover an interwoven web of lies, along with dire secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. Stopping at nothing to protect each other and their Kingdom

This was a adventurous Ya Romantic Fantasy that brought some noteworthy diversity within its pages. Including LGBTQ in several roles, such as Shadow’s adorable aunts, the male ambassador of Renovia who is married to a man, and a magical person who identifies as they/them, amongst some others..

“My aunts taught me that sometimes when the world is too much, when life starts to feel overwhelming, we must strip away what’s unnecessary, seek out the quiet, and listen to the dirt and trees. ‘All the answers you seek are there, but only if you are willing to hear them,’ Aunt Moriah always say.”

“My aunts warned me of this many times–be wary of the sway of others, they told me. Find your own path and stay upon it. Don’t allow yourself to be pulled in another direction, even if you must walk alone.”

Metropolis
by Ellie Midwood

Publication Date: January 31, 2020
Paperback & eBook; 238 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

Weimar Berlin, 1924

Unemployed actors, profiteers, cabaret girls, and impoverished aristocracy out of this wild set of characters populating Weimar Berlin, Margarete Gräfin von Steinhoff belongs to the latter category. Having lost everything due to hyper-inflation, she considers jumping into the freezing waters of the Spree rather than facing the humiliating existence shared by millions of her fellow Germans. However, a chance meeting makes her change her mind at the last moment and offers her a chance to rely on the help of the metropolis itself, where anything can be sold and bought for money and where connections are everything. The bustling nightlife of cosmopolitan Berlin, with its casinos and dance halls, brings good income for the ones who don’t burden themselves too heavily with morals.

After a New Years Eve party, Margot finally meets her ever-absent and mysterious neighbor, Paul Schneider, who makes a living by producing a certain type of film for his rich clientele. Under his guidance, Margot discovers a new passion of hers photography and soon, her talents are noticed by the prominent newspaper, Berliner Tageblatt itself. But being an official photographer of the most celebrated events of the La Scala and most famous Berlin theaters no longer satisfies Margots ambitions. As soon as the chance presents itself for her to get involved with the cinematography on the set of “Metropolis” – the film with the highest budget ever produced by the UFA Margot jumps at it, without thinking twice. At the same time, Paul becomes involved with a rival project, “The Holy Mountain,” which stars an as yet unknown actress and an emerging director in, Leni Riefenstahl. As the two women meet, professional rivalry soon turns into a true friendship, fueled by their passion for cinematography. However, due to the economic woes facing Germany, both projects soon run out of money and now, both film crews must go to extreme lengths to save their respective productions.

Set against the backdrop of a decadent, vibrant, and fascinatingly liberal Weimar Berlin, “Metropolis” is a novel of survival, self-discovery, and self-sacrifice, in the name of art, love, and friendship.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Margarete Gräfin von Steinhoff, an impoverished aristocracy has her mind set on ending it all. Just like a lot of Germans, Margot has lost everything, and the darkish waters of Spree look very inviting. When a chance in counter with another would be jumper, causes Margot to rethink her situation.

Ellie Midwood, Metropolis, is a wonderful historical fiction novel with that captures the riveting time period for Berlin, before the Nazis party arose to its complete soul wrenching dominating world power.

Set to the vibrant and very progressive liberal, Weimar. This is a time of unemployed actors, cabaret girls, and seedy night clubs, where the impoverished aristocratic mingled with those of a lower class. Germany between the first and second Wars, a time were the German Weimar Republic faced hyperinflation and political extremism. It also brought forth modern art and progressive gender diversity, where People enjoyed a lush a Bohemian, nouveau lifestyles.

Our female protagonist Margot, is a fleshed out well developed character, we see slowly becoming a dedicated photographer who works on the the edgy German Expressionist Science-Fiction revolutionary film, Metropolis. The film was directed by the very talented, Fritz Lang, and written by Thea Von Harbou In Collaboration with Lang, staring Gustav Fröhlich.

This was a faced paced historical drama that is richly texturized, giving the reader a glimpse into this truly intriguing part of Germany’s history. Engaging sub characters that adds diversity to plot line, along with novels seamless flowing dialogue, makes this an incredible historical drama.

About Maki

Thank you for visiting my site. Here’s a little bit about me!

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. In high school, I fell madly in love with Classic Literature: Austen, Brontë, Dickens, Dumas, James, Shelly, Tolstoy, and everything else! What I loved most about these books were the ways these authors used words to paint the story like beautiful artwork.

I wrote poems in my teenage years, and didn’t seriously start writing again until my daughter was 4 years old. I would put her down for the night, and write until 2 or 3 in the morning. I love writing in the hush of the early morning hours.

I wrote novel length manuscripts and I started attending writers conferences and conventions to learn about the industry, meet wonderful authors, and make friends with fellow writers who I’m still friends with today.

Around this time, our company started to provide book trailer video services to authors, and we were working with several New York Times Bestselling authors and big East Coast publishers. It was a great learning experience.

So now, I’m finally published! This has been one of my life’s dreams and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my stories with you!

Far Away Bird
by Douglas A. Burton

Publication Date: February 6, 2020

Paperback; 394 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

Inspired by true events, Far Away Bird delves into the complex mind of Byzantine Empress Theodora. This intimate account deftly follows her rise from actress-prostitute in Constantinople’s red-light district to the throne of the Byzantine Empire.

Her salacious past has left historians blushing and uncomfortable. Tales of her shamelessness have survived for centuries, and yet her accomplishments as an empress are unparalleled. Theodora goes on to influence sweeping reforms that result in some of the first ever Western laws granting women freedom and protection. More than a millennium before the women’s rights movement, Theodora, alone, took on the world’s greatest superpower and succeeded. Far Away Bird goes where history classrooms fear to tread in hopes that Theodora can finally take her seat among the greatest women in history.

Theodora seems impossible–yet her transcendence teaches us that society can’t tell us who we are deep down. Before there was a legendary empress, there was a conflicted young woman from the lower classes.

And her name was Theodora.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I love reading anything to do with Byzantine Empire, I named one gorgeous kitty’s after Zoë Prophyrogenita. So when I was presented with the opportunity to read a book about the incredible Theodora, I jumped at the chance.

Far away Bird by Douglasbased on the life of Theodora, the Byzantine Empress, rising up from humble beginnings in a strict unforgiving class systems to become an Iconic Empress.

Theodora is remembered as one of the first rulers to recognize the rights of women, installing a system of unprecedented codified laws that directly were in favor of women. Also passing strict laws to prohibit the trafficking in young girls and altering the divorce laws to give greater benefits to women. She spent much of her reign trying to alleviate these laws. Sometimes her checkered past tends to overshadow all her crucial accomplishment.

Theodora grew up around the political warring prominent factions of the the Greens and the Blues, that were mostly based around the chariot races at the Hippodrome. Her father, Acacius, held a paid commission as a bear trainer, and was a devoted Green supporter, up until his death in one of riots, Young Theodora and her mother and sisters lived a fairly comfortable lives Then everything changed upon the discovery that their father had lost his life due to some unrest during a night of protesting.

With the threat of being cast out on the streets, Maximina, Theodora’s mother is Magister Origen, a local judge, persuades her to marry Samuel, a candidate for her late husbands bear-keeper post.

Magister Origen, is not all he seems to be, and unscrupulous motives when he offers to have Theodora and her sister Comito, brought before a dancing master Asterius. When the harsh reality of Origen’s intentions, and the full truth of Theodora and her sister exact life lay before her, she takes matters into her own hands. Setting her and the rest of her family again into another dire situation. Her insightful mother, Maximina, takes desperate measures, in an emotional act of bravery, she seeks atonement for her family.

Burton, delivers a vividly descriptive, interesting, and well-written read here with characters and a setting that totally captivated and intrigued me. I was totally taken and fascinated with both Theodora and her rise from a lower station in a very rigid class system. With exceptional narration the author brings to life through these wonderful pages one of the most Iconic Roman Empress of The Byzantine Era.

Richly detailed, with seamless prose, Theodora’s character and her life is meticulously written to engage and enlighten the reader. Well developed sub-character are notable and intriguing, that bring incredible depth to this historical fiction. Staying close to historical and political events during this era, the author brings the desperation, struggles and strength of Theodora, to life. There are some early, riveting turns of events that change the main protagonist life. Some are gut wrenching, but also you see her true resilient capabilities.

Exquisite atmospheric scenes catapults the reader to Constantinople during the Byzantine Empire. Burton’s strong narration caries you through the early years of one of the most incredible woman in history.

The author strategically sets up the ending to allow for a stunning continuation. I am excited to see how Theodora’s character is further developed and this vibrant and intriguing storyline unfolds.

I definitely recommend this stunning historical fiction to my family and friends.
