A lovely intimate portrait of a young lady Anne Emmons, set in Regency Period.
Anne’s want more from a marriage than a business arrangement, and after seeing how her beautiful friend, Fanny has faired. She is in no rush to be just settled.
Her loving father, a man who has acquired his wealth and lands by trade, knows that with her sizable dowery she has an opportunity to claim a title. Anne and her close friend Fanny have a warm and caring friendship. Fanny and her family have taken Anne under their wing and brought her out amongst society. Shy and thoughtful Anne knows she is still not excepted in most of the tons circles, coming from a background of commerce instead of both parents having been titled
I enjoyed reading this heartwarming and captivating novel with its Regency time period details and description of the realities of domestic life.
What I really appreciated and noted was how the author captured social rise of the middle class and gender roles of this time period. Anne the main protagonist soon realizes that she has her own talents and interests. somehow the approval of society has became less important to her than it once was. Anne also has interest in a ancient Roman artifacts, that have been found in and around Britton. Or that she has written a manuscript on the it.
She satisfied with being alone and wants a marriage that it meaningful, not to be a wife that brings a large dowery to a gentleman of the gentry who‘s lands and manor might be in a state ruin.
As a friendship slowly develops over a period of time with one of our fathers business associates. Will Anne open her life up, and come to realize she that this gentleman is seeking only her heart?
Marriage & Gender Roles
As we see in the regency period , questions of land ownership and inheritance are closely interlinked with courtship and marriage. In the late eighteenth century, English conceptions of family and the role of women began to change, as British culture became increasingly focused on the accumulation and concentration of wealth within the family. One way for families to rapidly accumulate capital was through advantageous marriages. As a result, the position of daughters within the family changed, as they became the means through which a family could attain greater wealth. Familial aspirations, coupled with women’s increased dependence on marriage for financial survival, made courtship a central focus of women’s lives.
About the Author
An avid reader, Lauren Gilbert has always dreamed of writing books, and has written all her life. She enjoys non-fiction (especially history) and fiction alike. Favorite authors include James Thomas Flexner, Alison Weir, Diana Gabaldon, Sharon Kay Penman, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and, of course, Jane Austen. Lauren is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and has delivered presentations for chapter meetings, as well as a break-out session at the 2011 JASNA Annual General Meeting. Now semi-retired after a career spanning almost 30 years, HEYERWOOD: A Novel is her first published novel. Another novel, A RATIONAL ATTACHMENT, has just been released and a non-fiction work is in process. Lauren is a contributor to the English Historical Fiction Authors blog, and has several articles in CASTLES, CUSTOMS, AND KINGS True Tales by English Historical Fiction Authors volumes 1 and 2. Lauren Gilbert lives in Florida with her husband.
