Book Tour The Red Pearl

Hello Bookish Friends,

Today I am featuring The Red Pearl By Chloe Helton. A wonderful historical fiction. There is a Giveaway at the end the post, don’t forget to enter.

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chloe Helton will be awarding $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

“The Red Pearl is a delight. Meticulously researched, it transports the reader to the inns and backstreets of Boston in 1778. Lucy Finch’s personal tragedy spurs her on to take an active role in the revolutionary war, despite the immense danger it brings to herself, her family and friends. Ms. Helton’s characters are warm, living beings with gifts and flaws. Their relationships are altered — broken or strengthened — by the battles on distant fields and the evil of individuals closer to home.” – Carrie Bedford, Author of Nobilissima

There’s something peculiar about the small group of men who have begun to frequent The Red Pearl, the tavern that has hosted a variety of Boston’s men since before the Revolutionary War began. In a rebellious city that does not tolerate Loyalists, men could come here and speak freely without fear of the repercussions — and Jasper Finch, the tavern-keeper, has always been proud of that.

But now the war is in full force, and Lucy Finch — the tavern-keeper’s wife — is growing nervous about The Red Pearl’s most loyal customers. Their clandestine meetings and hushed whispers suggest dark secrets — secrets which may threaten the safety of Boston, and the future of the war itself.

Lucy struggles to stay loyal to her husband’s wishes while grappling with the surprising truths of America’s war for independence. When a terrible assault makes her ache for revenge, she must make a choice: Will she keep quiet about the explosive secrets she has learned, or will she expose them and risk her marriage and possibly her life?

Set in the wild and unpredictable world of the Revolutionary War, fans of historical fiction will fall in love with Lucy Finch, who faces impossible choices that may change the fate of a nation.

Chloe Helton’s The Red Pearl: A Novel of the American Revolution

Beautifully developed, the story line had the perfect blend Historical details and great dialogue. Chloe Helton’s newest novel is set in 1778 Boston, Following the historical event of the Boston Tea Party. The war is still raging on distant fields. The the town of Boston does not tolerate Loyalists.

Lucy Finch, the tavern-keeper’s wife has been married now to Jasper for seven years. Jasper’s bar the Red Pearl, hasn’t taken a stance since the war started. Serving Patriots and Loyalist alike. Lucy struggles to overcome a horrific experience, that has her wounded and scared. Questioning her safety and her marriage, she pulls away from her husband. Putting her safety at risk she has chances to alter some Redcoats shipments. Is she brave enough to step up and overcome and take action?

I devoured this one as fast as I could and was completely drawn into the lives of these characters. I turned those pages as fast as I could, the characters were memorable.

A thought provoking and engaging historical fiction, with complex situations, will definitely keep you engaged.

When I started to move, Jasper mumbled something. He wasn’t much of an early riser, but the sun was splashing through the windows now and we couldn’t let the guests wake before us. It had become my responsibility to make sure of that. “Up,” I urged, nudging his shoulder. “Imagine if Robby gets in the kitchen before we do.”

Now he blinked. Robby, our hired boy, was an honest worker, but he was useless without direct and clear orders. If he tried fiddling with the pots and pans without my direction, they’d all be broken before we even made it downstairs. “Didn’t we just fall asleep?” he groaned.

“Oh, enough. You’re terrible in the morning.”

“Come back down,” he said, wrapping an arm around my waist to pull me. “Lay next to me just a minute longer.”

I couldn’t have resisted, really, even if I wanted to. He was too strong. I brushed a hand through his clipped black hair. There had been days when I yearned for another kind of man, shaggy blonde hair and sharp blue eyes, but although he crossed my mind every day, almost, he was now little more than a ghost swirling in the morning fog. I was here with Jasper, who was dark and quiet and excruciatingly clean-shaven. There was drink to brew and mouths to feed here and I wasn’t a girl anymore.

“Jasper,” I said. I hadn’t been planning to mention this, but he was the one who pulled me back down to bed. “Are you planning to let those Tory meetings go on long?”

“What d’you mean?” he mumbled, his eyes barely open. “If they pay for it, they can have their meetings. And you shouldn’t call them that.”

In Sight of the Mountain by Jamie McGillen

Publication Date: September 4, 2019
The Evergreen Bookshelf
eBook & Paperback; 356 Pages
Genre: Historical Fiction

~ Inspired by the trailblazing women of the 19th Century who dared to summit Mount Rainier ~

In the devastating aftermath of the 1889 Great Seattle Fire, nineteen-year-old Anna Gallagher faces considerable pressure to marry well and soon.

She has two serious suitors: a well-meaning but condescending doctor, and an evasive fisherman who challenges her mind. But Anna has no intention of giving up her freedom to keep house; she has a dream to reach the summit of Mount Rainier.

Despite her family’s disapproval and her own self-doubt, she secretly trains, raises money for supplies, and buys a train ticket to the base of the mountain. If she succeeds in reaching its icy peak, she could pioneer the way for women mountaineers; but it’s a tall task and there’s much at risk—including the heart of a man who just might love her as an equal.

On the journey, Anna will face glaciers, avalanches, and frozen temperatures, all without knowing if she even has a family or a future to return to.

In Sight of the Mountain is a charming coming-of-age story, but it also casts the reader’s gaze upon issues of colonialism, class, and women’s far-too-narrow options.

Praise

“Focusing on themes of the liberation of women, the American class system and effects of colonialism, this intelligent and heart-warming novel introduces us to Anna Gallagher at the tender age of nineteen… In an epic and gripping work of historical fiction with modern sensibilities, author Jamie McGillen gives you everything you could possibly hope for in this inspiring and dramatic tale… Overall, In Sight of the Mountain is the perfect historical read for fans of pioneering heroes and tales of triumph over discrimination.” –K.C. Finn, Reader’s Favorite (5 Star Review)

“As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, I found it entertaining to try to picture Seattle as a frontier town and see Mount Rainier without its modern trappings. The story begins with the 1889 Seattle fire (a true event) and I was immediately hooked… In all, In Sight of the Mountain is a really great read–compelling, educational, containing complex characters and a well-crafted plot. Recommended for all readers YA and up who enjoy historical fiction. I’d give it more than 5 stars if I could.” –Donna Gielow McFarland, Reader’s Favorite (5 Star Review)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can’t settle down until I do something great.

I just need a purpose for my life besides marriage, something adventurous

In Sight of the Mountain is an insightful, inspiring novel from Jamie McGillen. Breathtaking, picturesque details make this one of the best historical fiction of the Pacific northwest.

Anna Gallagher, emigrated to Seattle from Ireland by her grandfather Oscar after the death of her parents and grandmother of smallpox in Ireland. In 1889 Anna is nineteen years old, seeking a purpose for life besides that of a wife and mother. Craving adventures. Her grandfather, Oscar owns a bookshop in town and Anna works for him. She struggles under the weight of the restrictions society places on her gender and the roles they view as proper. Her grandfather is pressuring her to make a suitable match to secure her future, Anna has her own dreams.

Gallagher has created a riveting coming of age storyline the draws the reader in, with her effortless and engaging writing. The main protagonist Anna, is relatable and a wonderful developed heroine. Anna is headstrong and fiercely independent, she doesn’t want to give up her freedom and conform to what is expected of her.

She has two suits vying for her affection, one is a local doctor the other is her brother’s handsome friend, Ben. Which she feels drawn to because they both have a mutual shared love of adventure.

A chance meeting while walking in the woods, she meets Heather, a young native of the Duwamish tribe, who lives off-reservation with her baby and grandmother in a cabin deep in the woods. Anna’s grandfather couldn’t disapprove more. And after he discovers Anna’s friendship with Heather, he threatens to disown her completely.

Time is running out for Anna to raise funds for training and to purchase a ticket, to join a climbing expedition up Mount Rainier.

The main protagonist Anna, is relatable and well developed heroine. I enjoyed supporting characters and they are definitely worth noting with interesting. Anna’s friendship with Heather a native of the Duwamish people. The author depicts the plight of the Duwamish people, along with the social cast system in Pacific Northwest at the turn of the 20th century.

In Sight of the Mountain is an insightful, inspiring novel of determination from Jamie McGillen. Breathtaking, picturesque details makes this one of the best historical fiction of the Pacific northwest.

About the Author

Jamie McGillen lives in the shadow of Mount Rainier, and no matter how many times she moves away, it draws her home. Everything about large evergreen trees delights her, except how poky they are, and the sap. Her poems and essays have been published in numerous literary journals, and she teaches English Composition at Highline College. When she’s not teaching or cutting strawberries for her starving children, she enjoys writing rhyming poetry, but it’s simply not as popular as it used to be. Book Review The Seventh Sun

Hello Bookish Friends,

Today I Am Featuring the upcoming epic fantasy

The Seventh Sun

This amazing cover features a sacrificial blade dripping with blood. Once you read the excerpt, it’s immediately obvious why this striking image was placed on the front of the book.

Behind it, in gold, is an ornate circle that certainly drums up images of a glowing sun. You don’t have to look any further than the title to understand why this also made the cover.

Put together, this ornate and enigmatic cover is certainly captivating.

The Seventh Sun

(The Age of the Seventh Sun #1)

by Lani Forbes

The Seventh Sun goes on sale in February 2020. Don’t forget to add it to your

The sun of the Chicome people has been destroyed six times. First by water, then by storm, fire, famine, sickness, and beasts. After each apocalypse, the creator goddess allowed one of her divine children to sacrifice themselves to save civilization. The gods paid their blood as the price for the lives of the people, and the people owed them blood in return.

Mayana is a noble descendant of the water goddess and can control water whenever her blood is spilled. She has always despised the brutal rituals of her people — especially sacrifices. She can’t even make it through a routine animal sacrifice without embarrassing her family. Prince Ahkin has always known he would be emperor, but he didn’t expect his father to die so suddenly. Now he must raise the sun in the sky each day and read the signs in the stars. But the stars now hint at impending chaos and the sun has begun setting earlier each evening. Ahkin fears he might not be strong enough to save his people from another apocalypse. And to add to his list of worries, he can’t truly become emperor until he selects a wife.

Mayana and six other noble daughters are sent to the palace to compete for Ahkin’s hand. She must prove she is a true daughter of water and face the others who have their own magical gifts from wielding the elements to the control of animals, plants and healing. And in a society centered on rigid rituals, Mayana must conceal her traitorous beliefs because if she doesn’t make Ahkin love her, she will become a ceremonial sacrifice to bless his marriage. But darker forces are at play and it won’t matter if Mayana loses if the world ends first…

Rich in imagination and romance, and based on the legends and history of the Aztec and Mayan people, The Seventh Sun brings to vivid life a world on the edge of apocalyptic disaster.

“Seriously, Mayana. I know you want to make Father proud more than anything, and you know the best way to do that is to just do the sacrifice.”

Mayana grimaced and turned to walk away. “Of course I want to make him proud. But forgive me if I don’t enjoy butchering animals because some ancient ritual says it protects us from—”

Chimalli grabbed her by the upper arm and pulled her back rather roughly.

“Chimalli!”

“Don’t ever let Father hear you say that. You have a tender heart, but you need to learn to silence it and do your duty to your people.”

Mayana yanked her arm back, her cheeks burning again. “I know. Believe me, Father’s already made his thoughts on the matter clear.”

“So why won’t you just do your duty without such a fight?”

Something hot and angry writhed in her gut. “I am doing my duty. I am leading the prayers, the dances …”

“And you will lead tonight’s sacrifice to appease the gods.”

“Why don’t you go jump off the temple, Chimalli?”

Her brother gave her a long warning glare before wiggling his eyebrows and disappearing after a group of giggling merchant daughters. She crossed her arms and stuck out her tongue at his retreating form.

The anticipation of the evening’s coming events soured her against any kind of frivolity. Her twin brothers, Achto and Aquin, each twenty cycles old, tried to get her to pole fly with them — a request she quickly rejected. Dressed as birds, with ropes tied around their feet, her brothers jumped from the top of the high pole and swung in circles around it, suspended by their ankles. Exactly fifty-four revolutions in honor of the calendar stone. She shook her head with a shudder, imagining the pounding in their skulls from being upside down for so long. All the gold in the capital would not be enough to make her join them. At fourteen cycles old, her other brother, Mati, should be busy playing with his friends or older brothers too. But Mayana guessed he was probably busy lurking around the temple reading and memorizing any codex sheet he could get his curious little hands on.

By the time the sun began to set and the shell horns signaled the return to the palace, she had followed the rituals exactly as the holy texts instructed. Her relief, however, was temporary. The real test of her conviction would take place before the feast.

“Mayana,” the lord of Atl greeted her when she took her seat on a cushion beside him. “How did today go?”

She could hear his hidden meaning: Did you follow the codex?

“I did my duty.” Mayana looked down at her knees.

“Your duties are not yet finished.” He dipped his chin and fixed her with a meaningful glare.

Her stomach churned. I have to do it, she told herself. It will be over soon.

Every member of the royal family, both immediate and extended, filled the central botanical garden of the palace. Mayana’s five brothers sat circled around her and her father, while her aunts, uncles, and cousins branched out in rings like those on the sacred calendar stone. The empty space beside her father drew her attention for the briefest moment and her throat tightened — Mayana didn’t want to think about her mother.

“Did you see the red comet in the sky?” a voice whispered close by. She turned to find the source of the comment, but with so many voices chattering, she couldn’t tell who had spoken. Goosebumps rose on her arms.

Royal guests from other city-states lounged on Atl’s finest cushions, sprinkled among the crowd like the drops of her blood on the sacrificial papers. Ceremonial feasts were as much a political event as they were religious — a chance to show her family’s power and prestige. A man from the city of Ocelotl lounged nearby, the skin of a jaguar draped across his expansive shoulders.

Her palms grew moist, so she wiped them on the fabric of her skirt.

Servants meandered through the loud, sweaty crowd carrying small bowls of pulque, a fermented drink made from the sap of a maguey plant. Those too young for the pulque received a drink made of cacao. The codex dictated exactly what and when the Chicome could eat and drink during the ceremonies. The rest of the food would not be brought out until … well, until she fulfilled the next ritual.

Her father stood, and the babbling voices around them quieted. He spread his arms wide, embracing the crowd. His many ornaments rattled into the sudden silence. Mayana could smell the roasted meat and corn cakes waiting just out of view and her mouth watered in anticipation.

“My family and honored guests.” He nodded to the man from Ocelotl and several others. Mayana took a sip of her cacao drink and tried to stop her hands from trembling. “We are safe from floods and drought for another three months.” The room exploded into excited yells and exclamations before the lord of Atl hushed them.

“Let us now honor the Mother Ometeotl and the sacrifice her divine children made with a sacrifice of our own to bless the food we are about to eat. The great city of Ocelotl has brought to us a beast in honor of the month of the bird.”

Mayana’s father gestured to the visitor with the jaguar pelt. The man rose gracefully to his feet before gouging his palm with an obsidian blade much larger than Mayana’s tiny knife. He waved his bleeding hand in a great arc, and a flock of birds erupted through an open window. This did not surprise Mayana in the slightest. Royal naguals from the city-state of Ocelotl used their divine blood to possess and control the spirits of animals.

Birds swirled around the courtyard like a black-and-yellow raincloud, singing their hauntingly beautiful melodies. Their music stirred something deep within her heart. Tears pricked behind her eyes, but she held them back, knowing they would accomplish nothing. The crowd clapped and squealed in delight. Her little brother jumped to his feet and batted at the birds with his hands, but one look from their father quelled his excitement. He quickly returned to his cushion, head bowed in respect.

Lord Atl slowly paced toward the burning pit sunk into the center of the courtyard and motioned for Mayana to follow. She rose — still shaking slightly — and tightly gripped the wooden handle of her obsidian dagger. Holding onto something solid gave her strength. Saying a silent prayer to the Mother goddess, Mayana begged to be spared from the ritual, from causing a scene and disappointing her father again.

With the flick of the royal nagual’s finger, a single black-and-yellow bird broke away from the flock, landing delicately on her wrist. Mayana cupped the tiny creature in her other hand. The bird stared up at her with a glassy black eye, tilting its head as though asking a question. Her stomach dropped. She couldn’t do this.

Mayana looked at her father, tears building despite her best effort, and silently pleaded for him to stop her.

“Mayana.” The lord of Atl barely moved his lips. “You must.”

“Father–” Her voice broke. “Please.”

“If you do not, you risk the safety and well-being of the entire Chicome Empire,” he growled through gritted teeth.

“I did everything else. I did it all perfectly, Father.”

“We are not doing this again. You will do your duty this time, or so help me Mayana …”

She sucked in a breath. She hated sacrificing animals even more than sacrificing her own blood. At least her hand would be healed … unlike the bird’s throat. Her empathy toward the small creature was overwhelming, especially when she thought of her dog Ona and what her father had done to him. But she couldn’t refuse. Her mother wasn’t here to save her anymore.

This was her duty, no matter how hard her heart screamed in protest. Her father would force her hands to do it, just like he had last time. Hot tears slid down her cheeks, but she slowly lifted the blade of her knife toward the bird’s neck. She hated this ritual. Hated it.

At that moment, a man burst through the woven tapestry covering the main entrance. Mayana dropped the hand with the blade to her side, exhaling the breath she was holding. The newcomer was dressed in a white cotton cloak that glittered with golden thread. The flaps of his loincloth hung to his knees and jingled with tiny bells. Upon his dark hair sat a headband of small yellow feathers, reminding Mayana of a cockatoo with yellow plumage.

Everyone in the room recognized the colors at once. This man was from Tollan, the golden capital born from the first darkness — the City of the Sun.

He gripped the stone frame of the doorway, leaning against it and panting hard. The crowd waited, the silence in the room thicker than corn cakes. A feeling like cold water rose in Mayana’s chest. She felt as though she was drowning.

Whatever news he held, it would not be good.

A plague of rats. A giant beast outside the village walls. A host of missing children. And one young woman determined to save her people.

In 1424 Hamlin, Katerina faces threats from all sides. An outbreak of rats has overtaken the village, a mysterious beast is on a killing rampage of the village’s children, and her evil stepfather is a dark presence inside the walls of her own home. Katerina is determined to hunt and kill the Beast of Hamlin herself before more lives are lost.

When Steffan, the handsome but brash duke’s son, comes to town seeking glory and reward, Katerina decides he might be the ally she’s been looking for—even though the sweet music he plays on his pipe seems the only gentle thing about him. But there’s more to Steffan than she suspects, and she finds drawn to him despite her misgivings.

Can Katerina and Steffan stop the enemy from stealing every child of Hamlin? Or will their interference create a worse fate for them all? Melanie Dickerson delivers another exciting fairy tale journey of intrigue and romance in this reimagining of the classic Pied Piper story.

I received a copy of this book via the publisher, Thomas Nelson and The Fantastic Flying Book Club in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

This engaging book, is the 10th book in the Hagenheim series. A Young Adult Christian Fiction Retelling Romance, published on December 3rd 2019 by Thomas Nelson Christy Award–winner Dickerson, reimagines the Pied Piper story in this excellent installment to her Hagenheim series.

The tale is set in 1424 in the German region of the Holy Roman Empire. Katerina, a fiercely private warrior-maiden. Her determination to protect her townspeople from the evildoings of her stepfather, who happens to be the town mayor.

When the children of the town start going missing and are presumed to be victims of the Beast of Hamlin, the mayor offers Katerina’s hand in marriage to anyone who can kill the beast. Katerina, determined to escape from her stepfather, she vows to kill the beast herself. Steffan, one of the sons of the Duke of Hagenheim, is intent on winning the prize for himself. The two become reluctant duo in their quest, along the way, they realize they share some of the same values and learn to trust one other.

You are thrown right into a beautiful, vivid and established world with fully fleshed out characters, and lands. The author brings together faith, personal sacrifice, atonement, and a wonderful heartwarming romance. Dickerson’s writings almost always contain fairy tale element, I adore retellings, with strong heroines, along with the perfect amount of modest romance. While giving the reader faith based messages within the pages.

London 1666

Elizabeth ‘Bird’ Carpenter has a wonderful singing voice, and music is her chief passion. When her father persuades her to marry horse-dealer Christopher Knepp, she suspects she is marrying beneath her station, but nothing prepares her for the reality of life with Knepp. Her father has betrayed her trust, for Knepp cares only for his horses; he is a tyrant and a bully, and will allow Bird no life of her own.

When Knepp goes away, she grasps her chance and, encouraged by her maidservant Livvy, makes a secret visit to the theatre. Entranced by the music, the glitter and glamour of the surroundings, and the free and outspoken manner of the women on the stage, she falls in love with the theatre and is determined to forge a path of her own as an actress.

But life in the theatre was never going to be straightforward – for a jealous rival wants to spoil her plans, and worse, Knepp forbids it, and Bird must use all her wit and intelligence to change his mind.

Based on events depicted in the famous Diary of Samuel Pepys, Entertaining Mr Pepys brings London in the 17th Century to life. It includes the vibrant characters of the day such as the diarist himself and actress Nell Gwynne, and features a dazzling and gripping finale during the Great Fire Of London.

The third in Deborah Swift’s atmospheric trilogy, bringing to life the women in Pepys’ Diary. Each novel features a different character and can be read as a stand-alone book.

These wonderful books intertwine with each other, but are complete stand-alones, so you can read them in any order.

Based on events depicted in the famous Diary of Samuel Pepys

Entertaining Mr Pepys, is an astonishing book that brings, Restoration London in the 17th Century completely to life. Mary Elisabeth “Bird” Carpenter was born into an affluent family. and has had a leisurely comfortable life in her father’s house until he married a woman named Dorcas. Dorcas wants her stepdaughter removed from out under her house and has her husband was so wrapped around her finger that he didn’t pay enough heed in selecting a husband for his daughter, Bird

When Christopher Knepp a livery owner showed an interest in marrying Bird in exchange for a modest dowry, her father agrees, What followed is a miserable horrific life for Bird. Constantly abused by her husband, and completely forgotten by her father, she befriends Livvy, her Dutch maid, living in England.

Mary Elizabeth ‘Bird’ Knepp, in a series of events attends a theatrical production at the theater. Bird notices the freedom and outspoken manner of the women on the stage, and falls in love with the glamorous lifestyle of the stage. The reopening of the theatres after the Restoration, women were allowed for the first time to act on the stage. Previously, female roles had been performed by young boys. This dramatic change opened up a world of titillation and scandal.

Bird, cleverly comes up with a plan to join the theater company, in hopping to raise enough money to leave her vile vicious husband, Knepp. Knepp is reluctant to allow his wife to go on stage, (to tread the boards). So Bird, Devise a plan and presents him a business opportunity for his failing livery.

I loved everything about this book from the gritty, back-streets to dramatic theater as our main protagonist catches the eye of an avid theatre-goer Samuel Pepys.Swift is a masterly storyteller, her writing is exceptional, her characters are three Dimensional, with complex layers. The characters became more fleshed with progression of the storyline.

Deborah Swift, infuses historical facts along with her own creative fiction, with some of the best authentic atmospheric details I have ever read before. The author touches on current events at that time, political turmoil, and religious persecution, along with slavery set to London’s seedy backdrop.

Compelling well diverse characters that were engaging, along with historical descriptive details of working-class people in 1660s London. The ending had me on the edge of my seat as Swift, depicts the chaos and devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666.

Samuel Pepys portrait from 1666 by J. Hayls

The actress Eleanor ‘Nell’ Gwyn

Despite some opposition to women on stage – some thought the profession ‘shameful’ and ‘unwomanish’ – the majority reaction appears to have been a positive one.

Pepys clearly appreciated seeing these new beautiful and talented actresses, which included Hester Davenport, Mary ‘Moll’ Davis, Mary Saunderson and Elizabeth Knepp (all mentioned in the diary), and seems never to have been that convinced by men playing female roles. In March 1667 he wrote, ‘to the Theatre, and there saw The Scornfull Lady, now done by a woman, which makes the play appear much better than ever it did to me’. His positive reaction was shared by the King, also a keen theatre-goer, who saw the stage as a lucrative source of mistresses too.

Have you ever wanted to do something that everyone said was impossible? Then you’ll love BLACK & BLUE. Loosely based on the author’s own life, this coming-of-age novel will inspire you to pursue your dreams.

For as long as she can remember, “Toady” wanted nothing more than to play football.  But for Toady, the love of football is bittersweet – because Toady’s given name is Christine. She’s a girl, and girls “can’t” play football. Despite her exceptional abilities, she watches bitterly as the boys play on the high school team and win scholarships.  Reluctantly, she gives up her football dreams and moves to New York City – where she finds that life is full of surprises. Christine hears about a group of women playing flag football, and she joins their game. The players are so good that before long, they’re invited to become part of a professional women’s tackle league.
For Christine, this is the chance she’s always dreamed of. Not only does she play football, but she raises enough money to become the team’s owner. But that’s when the real challenges begin. Does Christine have the guts and the stamina to spite the odds? BLACK & BLUE will leave readers cheering as Christine doubles down to fight for her dreams and for the women who want nothing more than to play their favorite sport. If you loved Bend It Like Beckham or A League of Their Own, you’ll adore BLACK & BLUE.

Have you listened to your inner voice and followed your lifelong

dream?

What if you had a dream to be, or do something, and everything and everyone was against you.

Black & Blue: Love, Sport and the Art of Empowerment, by Andra Douglas, is a compelling read from beginning to end a by Andra Douglas, partly sports fiction, but also reads like amemoir.

A powerful moving book, about a woman who in the the face of adversity followed her lifelong passion for football. She refuses to accept the roles cast on her by her birth gender and growing up in the deep American South.

“I grew up in the South. The freedom the South offers to its males is a singular experience. Gaining this freedom is a game of sorts… Football is the southern males’ identity.”

“Had I been born a male, things would have been different… the South would have engulfed me, seduced me and made me a child of its own. As a female, it still engulfed me, still seduced me, but then betrayed me as lovers do who end up bitter, never repairing the scars of trust gone awry.”

Christine, “Toady” came from a family of three girls and her sisters were your typical girly-girls while she had an inner calling to be something more diverse. She was tomboyish by nature. Christine loved football, she passionate, maybe a little obsessed with it. She wanted to be accepted by her peers, even early on in her younger.

She struggled and improved despite everything to be accepted by the neighborhood boys and to actually play football with them.

Toady, is from Zephyrhills, Florida, and football is a huge pastime. With lots devotion and practice she excels at football. Even though she is probably better than a lot of guys, she is denied a spot on the high school team. Her Senior year, she watches unhappily as her male classmates win college football scholarships.

Toady’s family are devote Florida State University, FSU football fans. So, it was decided early on that all the girls in her family would attend FSU university.

Upon graduation from High School, she leaves the south far behind and their notion of what is suitable for young women. She attends Pratt Institue, And pursues her love of Art in New York City. While still harboring her love of the game of football.

When the unexpected chance opportunity to finally play tackle football comes along, she jumps at it. In a series of events Christine buys an all women’s football team.

The Organizing and searching for players, coaches and locations and other teams to play against is a daunting task considering all the obstacles that she is faced to be taken serious within In all male dominating sport. She rices as quarterback and owner for the women’s professional football team the New York Sharks. When unforeseen circumstances happen, and Christine is faced with challenges, she most re-examine herself.

The authors writing flows seamlessly and the well developed characters come to life with this exceptional storyline.

This is an astonishing coming of age book that is a most read for anyone. A deeply moving, powerful book about the injustice still placed on girls and woman, and over coming adversity.

I raised both of my daughters to be strong powerful woman. While reading this book I had a flashback of my oldest daughter in ROTC In high school. The guys were starting a game of touch football, and my daughter asked if she could play. I think they laughed and said why not.

So all the parents were standing by at this ROTC function watching are children play. One lady asked if I was actually going to let my daughter play, and if I was worried for her safety. I answered her back by saying I was hoping she wouldn’t hurt some of the smaller boys because they stopped playing touch and it had advanced to tackle football.

*AUTHOR OF ONE OF BUZZFEED’S GREATEST FANTASY BOOKS OF 2013*
From the author of the beloved Society of Sword and Wolf of the North trilogies, Duncan M. Hamilton’s Knight of the Silver Circle –the sequel adventure-packed fantasy to Dragonslayer in The Dragonslayer trilogy–is perfect for fans of magical beasts and unexpected heroes

Three dragons wreak havoc throughout Mirabay–eating livestock, killing humans, and burning entire villages to ash. It was nearly impossible to kill one, using a legendary sword and the magic of the mysterious Cup; to tackle three, Guillot dal Villerauvais will need help.

The mage Solène fears having to kill again; she leaves Gill to gain greater control over her magic.

The Prince Bishop still wants Gill dead, but more than that, he wants the Cup, and he’ll do whatever he has to to get it, even sending his own daughter–a talented thief and assassin–into the dragons’ path.

As secrets mount on secrets and betrayals on betrayals, both Guillot and Solène face critical decisions that will settle not only their own fate but that of all Mirabaya.

“Betrayals, ritual magic, an enchanted relic, and lost histories. A charming narrative… entertaining. Recommended for fans of dragons and medieval settings.”—Library Journal on Dragonslayer

“Successfully mixes swords, sorcery, and skullduggery with complex characters. Dumas fans will especially appreciate the faux-French setting. This is pure adventure fun with plenty for epic fantasy readers to enjoy.”—Publishers Weekly on Dragonslayer

Dragons have returned after a thousand years, but greater dangers lurk in the shadows…

Knight of the Silver Circle, by Duncan M. Hamilton is the next installment in highly anticipated, The Dragonslayer Trilogy. Guillot dal Villerauvais is drawn farther into the life and service he had left far behind. Solène attempts to come to terms with the great magical talent she fears is as much a curse as a blessing,

Knight of the Silver Circle is an incredible epic fantasy, the author delivers an atmospheric, stunning adventurous storyline, the pacing and execution is excellent. Wonderfully engaging with creative multiple POVs makes for an enjoyable read.

People in nearby towns are terrified, and one mayor has searched out Guillot to ask for help. It seems some of the dragon eggs have hatched and the babies are growing quickly. Amaury, the Prince Bishop, is still thirsting for for power and wrecking havoc through out kingdom. His character is more developed and refined in this book. All the characters become more fleshed out. The atmospheric fantasy world building is stellar. The plot line has some intriguing twist, with betrayals. Engaging political intrigue along with some key elements surface within the novel.

Hamilton leads the reader as the book progresses and really takes off on a spellbinding aventures tale.

A exceptional written fantasy novel, that I was completely immersed in. I completely unprepared for the ending, and can’t wait for the last book in this mind blowing fantasy series.

A name is given, a reputation is earned

The Lords of the Wind, by C.J. Adrien, is the first installment in The Saga of Hasting the Avenger series. An enthralling Viking historical fiction that takes the reader on a thriller adventure, from Ireland to the great northern freezing, unforgiving land of the Fjords.

The author C.J. Adrien, newest stunning epic novel, catapults the reader in this compelling first person narration, of Hastings The Wolf, Son of the danish chieftain Ranger. Hastings is sold into slavery and sent to Ireland. to a loathsome man named Hagar. After his father is slain for his coveted wealth and lands.

As young boy he neglected and beaten, surviving under harsh circumstances. When In a series of events, leads Hastings to be purchased by visiting Viking Eilif. He is given his freedom and is recruited as a ship’s boy on Eilif Ship. While onboard he learns all aspects of what it means to sail a Viking ship. In an almost near death drowning, Hastings has a profound vision of a mythical god.

From this point on book takes the reader on a harrowing, dramatic journey. From the protagonist enslavement to his seafaring days as a captain of his own ship. Impeccable historical research, along with rich atmospheric world building, makes this book standout from other Viking inspired books I have read in the past.

The authors vast expert knowledge and fleshed out details, allows you to be fully immersed into Adriens Viking world. Adrien’s, intricately plots a character driven adventure, with vibrant characters, with an interesting storyline. This brilliantly executed book, inspired by the authors creative imagination, along with historical facts, makes for an riveting, nonstop read.

The Lords of Wind, will draw you in and keep you turning the page for more. It’s the perfect sort of diverse escapist fiction we all need. A chance to get away from all the stresses of the real world. I loved the overall premise of the novel, and the quick pace kept me engaged. The storyline and the authors stellar narration carries the reader along; therefore, it’s like living through the eyes of the lead protagonist, Hastings.

The Lords Of The Wind, is a brilliant, harrowing tale, that makes for a gripping and wonderful read, and if you love anything that is Viking, then I definitely recommend you read this one!

After reading “Clouded by Envy,” I have impatiently to get back into the magical world of Laith. Once again the author pulls you in to her fascinating, solid epic fantasy. There a lot of familiar magical items and creatures, along with the mythology of Luca, jovkins, bats, and the Stone of Desire.

Veiled by Desire,is a stunning book in this series, the author engages the reader with a whole new depth to Laith. This wonderful wonderful fantasy is incredible, with stellar world building. The characters are compelling and fleshing out.

They compliment this fantasy world in a way that drew me right in the beginning, and kept me reading all the way through to the end.

The prose and writing flows and the chapters are told in alternating points of view and there are many places where the past is explained through past-present meticulous transitions.

This riveting storyline had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole novel and the relationships and the friendships in this story are beautiful depicted.

Engaging, strong female led characters makes this one of my favorite books this year.

I love love fantasy books, and this book is exceptional, and has exceeded my expectations for a second book in a series. It can be standalone novel all by itself, but since I really enjoyed the first book, I would definitely recommend reading the first book book in the Laith series. Veiled By Desire is a companion book to Clouded by Envy.

I would definitely recommend this to my family and friends !

Quil picked up the instrument from the top of his pack and played a new melody that made her body want to dance, her soul to fly, and her heart to beat with the rhythm. Rhona wished she could stay here, live beside the river, and dance to his music all day, every day. But that could never happen.”

Excerpt

Seven years of this. Tavarra closed her eyes and gripped the chains around the tree that bound her wrists together. She howled with urgency, screamed, and bared her fangs. As she stared up at the twin moons in the darkening sky, she knew her fate was coming. A fire spread throughout her entire body with a wicked touch, and she shook violently.

“The chains will hold this time,” her friend Eza said, landing on Tavarra’s shoulder. If Tavarra killed the pesky bat, there would be nothing, no one, and she had grown to love Eza after all these years.

“Get out of here, Eza! Now!” Tavarra screamed.

“I’ll be right here,” the bat murmured and flew up into the tree above. Eza looked incredibly similar to a fairy except for the thin blackened wings, fangs, and sharper-pointed ears. She was a little taller than the size of Tavarra’s hand from wrist to the tip of the claw on her middle finger.

Tavarra was trying to fight the change. She would win this time. As she breathed in the scents of Laith, Tavarra knew it was a lie, and indeed, she knew she’d failed when her skin began to stretch. She could feel her face taking on a new shape, and that was when the terror came because the night would be unknown to her. That was what haunted her the most. Tavarra held back the tears, unwilling to break, unwilling to bend and show weakness.

All that remained in her soul, heart, and existence, was hunger. She yearned and thirsted for blood, meat, and bones.

Distant Signs by Anne Richter

Publication Date: November 7, 2019
Neem Tree Press
Hardcover; 240 Pages
Genre: Historical Fiction/Romance/Saga

Distant Signs is an intimate portrait of two families spanning three generations amidst turbulent political change, behind and beyond the Berlin Wall. In 1960s East Germany, Margret, a professor’s daughter from the city, meets and marries Hans, from a small village in Thuringia. The couple struggle to contend with their different backgrounds, and the emotional scars they bear from childhood in the aftermath of war. As East German history gradually unravels, with collision of the personal and political, their two families’ hidden truths are quietly revealed. An exquisitely written novel with strongly etched characters that stay with you long after the book is finished and an authentic portrayal of family life behind the iron curtain based on personal experience of the author who is East German and was 16 years old at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Why do families repeat destructive patterns of behaviour across generations? Should the personal take precedence over the political? Can we rise above our histories and political identities to forge a new understanding of the past and to welcome change?

Why do families repeat destructive patterns of behaviour across generations? Should the personal take precedence over the political?

What was gained and what was lost with the re-unification of Germany?

Can we rise above our histories and political identities to forge a new understanding of

the past and to welcome change?

Distant Signs, Is an intimate depiction of three generations and two families as the unfolds from 1965 to 1992. The author,s moving storyline covers the effects of WWII, the German Democratic Republic and eventually the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The author precision narration along with well constructive character development kept me engaged all the way through to the end.The writing flows and you understand that even though each generation longs for a happier life than that of their parents, they have common goal that is compromised by restrictions and family dynamics along with some sad misunderstandings.

Margret is the daughter of a university professor, a brazen new generation of young people challenging their parents and the harsh realities of the East German state. Her father, Friedrich has achieved a privileged position in society.

Hans is a future biology student from a provincial town, and they meet and fall in love during an agricultural placement in the 1960s. What should be a happy couple and eventually a joyful family, they are emotionally crippled into the same pattern of their own parents.

Hans and Margaret’s household becomes tension filled, both are continuously struggling with their different upbringing. Coming from different social backgrounds, and both shouldering emotional scars from their childhood in the aftermath of WWII.

As the story moves along, I noted each member of the family is emotionally scared, struggling with what they have been exposed to. The author doesn’t just tell you why, she shows you what it is for generations living under a political system where expressing ones own thoughts was a conflict from official state policy’s. This silence is deafening, handed down generation after generation which is seen through this family historical storyline.

A delicate and thought provoking in depth look into the emotional struggles of post war. This is a book that you won’t just reread sentence after sentence, I found myself going back reading a couple of chapters, just to understand the complexity of the characters and the development of the plot line.

Anne Richter, has written a soul wrenching, emotionally charged, beautifully moving book, This is definitely one that you will remember well after you finished reading it.

November 9th, 2019, marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

*The book offers a wonderful inclusion of some phrases and words are explained at the back of the book.

Book Review Floodtide

Happy Friday Bookish Babes,

Here Is My Book Review of Floodtide

Floodtide (A Novel of Alpennia) Paperback –

November 19, 2019

by Heather Rose Jones

Publisher: Bella Book

The streets are a perilous place for a young laundry maid dismissed without a character for indecent acts. Roz knew the end of the path for a country girl alone in the city of Rotenek. A desperate escape in the night brings her to the doorstep of Dominique the dressmaker and the hope of a second chance beyond what she could have imagined. Roz’s apprenticeship with the needle, under the patronage of the royal thaumaturgist, wasn’t supposed to include learning magic, but Celeste, the dressmaker’s daughter, draws Roz into the mysterious world of the charm-wives. When floodwaters and fever sweep through the lower city, Celeste’s magical charms could bring hope and healing to the forgotten poor of Rotenek, but only if Roz can claim the help of some unlikely allies.

Set in the magical early 19th century world of Alpennia, Floodtide tells an independent tale that interweaves with the adventures.

A Novel of Alpennia.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

Floodtide, by the author #HeatherRoseJones is a “alternate-Regency-era Ruritanian adventure” coined by the author,

The fourth book in the the much loved Alpennia series.

The lead protagonist is a laundry maid Rozild Pairmen, who struggles under her formidable enemy is a housekeeper, who holds the power to dismiss her at a whim.

Roz is Dismissed because of her indiscretions that cause a series of events.

Roz, is then presented with a second chance from the dressmaker Mefro Dominique,

The dressmaker is understanding of Roz’s plight, but also knows what favors to call in. Mefro Dominique, carefully collects and hoards favors from the women who are her clientele. Rozild becomes an apprentice steady rising in her position.

The household has a close relationship of woman, and Roz becomes close to Celeste, who happens to have a talent for magical charms. This very important talent becomes needed when the river that divides the city floods and brings the dreaded river fever that could kill thousands.

This captivating novel is rich and vibrant, with wonderful diverse characters.

An historical magical realism book at its best. transporting the reader to another place and time. I was completely immersed into Heather Rose Jones meticulous world building, The storyline flows beautifully and the intriguing secrets we get to know as the main protagonist does. Roz is headstrong character, knowing what she could expect out of life, But struggles at the bonds that have been placed on her. This add depth to the plot line. Wonderful characters development and complex relationships, along with the setting period drama are brought to life with unique details.

This is a splendidly exquisite book!

Book Review The Dead Girl Club

Hello Friends,

I recently got one of my most anticipated reads this year in the mail! I’m so excited to read The Dead Girls Club by @dawalters (HUGE thank you to @crookedlanebooks #partner for my copy

Did you ever tell ghost stories or play supernatural games to scare your friends as a kid? I don’t know about y’all, but I definitely used to play light as a feather, stiff as a board. I have three childhood friends that can attest to some creeped out moments we had.

My Rating – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars

Genre – Horror / Thriller

Release Date – December 10, 2019

TW – Emotional and Physical Abuse, Murder

A supernatural thriller in the vein of A Head Full of Ghosts about two young girls, a scary story that becomes far too real, and the tragic–and terrifying–consequences that follow one of them into adulthood.

Red Lady, Red Lady, show us your face…

In 1991, Heather Cole and her friends were members of the Dead Girls Club. Obsessed with the macabre, the girls exchanged stories about serial killers and imaginary monsters, like the Red Lady, the spirit of a vengeful witch killed centuries before. Heather knew the stories were just that, until her best friend Becca began insisting the Red Lady was real–and she could prove it.

That belief got Becca killed.

It’s been nearly thirty years, but Heather has never told anyone what really happened that night–that Becca was right and the Red Lady was real. She’s done her best to put that fateful summer, Becca, and the Red Lady, behind her. Until a familiar necklace arrives in the mail, a necklace Heather hasn’t seen since the night Becca died.

The night Heather killed her.

Now, someone else knows what she did…and they’re determined to make Heather pay.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

This engaging, intriguing storyline gets your attention right from the start!

“when you recall the event, you aren’t remembering the event itself, only the last recollection. A memory of a memory. And if the mind wants something to be real, it can rearrange facts and circumstances to suit. Sometimes we make up stories to explain things to ourselves; sometimes we do it to hide the truth.”

Heather, Rachel, Gia, and Becca are just your average American girls. They love to laugh, hangout, and talk about serial killers. But most importantly of all is that the girls love when Becca tells them about the Red Lady. A woman who will do favors but always takes what she is owed. But it’s just a story, right?

Heather and Becca form a storytelling club, as the title suggests. They meet at an unoccupied house currently on the market with two other friends. All four girls love being scared, but one story seems all too real. Becca shares the history of the Red Lady, a woman scorned and out for vengeance.

Dirt in victims mouth. Buried alive. Multiple random deaths. Did it really happen? In a teenager’s mind, anything is possible… but this time, Becca has convinced them the woman is still alive today. The dilemma is set quite early on, yet the pertinent details seep out through the subsequent chapters. We don’t know everything, and when we begin to see Heather break down in the current time period, we know something bad happened years ago. I loved the chilling aspect of a ghostly witch with evil intent. Is she real? Is she all in the girls’ heads? Is she just metaphor in a young girls mind ?

The author has meticulous leads you to believe that the Red Lady, fact or fictional really all depends on your own perspective. Kinda like the Schrodinger’s cat of witches, it depends on the circumstances. To me, she’s is like the Schrodinger’s cat of witches. She’s both real and not, depending on the circumstances.

This stunning dark tale is told in chapters that alternate between Heather’s current day perspective as a therapist for kids and one fateful summer in 1991 when she, Becca, and their two friends tried to summon the Red Lady. The girls in Walters’s novel are on the precipice, finding their way through a time when they are changing, growing up, realizing that the world is not always as nice as they’ve been led to believe. They are beginning to not believe in the extraordinary as ordinary anymore.

The author focus on the friendship between two teenage girls, Heather and Becca. The tale reveals bit by bit, challenging readers to decide for themselves what information is missing and what could be happening. It’s not possible that the Red Lady has come back to life after centuries to get revenge, Or is It ?…….

An atmospheric disturbing but enticing witchy supernatural twist your mind around mystery. Find out what really happens as you are enveloped into the past through flashbacks. What you think is not what happens. Kept me on the edge of my seat until I was finished

SUMMARY:

Princes have pomp and glory—not murdered secretaries and crushes on commoners

Nothing gets London’s high society’s tongues wagging like a good scandal. And when the personal secretary of the visiting Prince Sebastian of Alucia is found murdered, it’s all anyone can talk about, including Eliza Tricklebank. Her unapologetic gossip gazette has benefitted from an anonymous tip about the crime, prompting Sebastian to take an interest in playing detective—and an even greater one in Eliza.

With a trade deal on the line and mounting pressure to secure a noble bride, there’s nothing more salacious than a prince dallying with a commoner. Sebastian finds Eliza’s contrary manner as frustrating as it is seductive, but they’ll have to work together if they’re going to catch the culprit. And when things heat up behind closed doors, it’s the prince who’ll have to decide what comes first—his country or his heart.

CHAPTER ONE

London 1845

All of London has been on tenterhooks, desperate for a glimpse of Crown Prince Sebastian of Alucia during his highly anticipated visit. Windsor Castle was the scene of Her Majesty’s banquet to welcome him. Sixty-and-one-hundred guests were on hand, feted in St. George’s Hall beneath the various crests of the Order of the Garter. Two thousand pieces of silver cutlery were used, one thousand crystal glasses and goblets. The first course and main dish of lamb and potatoes were served on silver-gilded plates, followed by delicate fruits on French porcelain.

Prince Sebastian presented a large urn fashioned of green Alucian malachite to our Queen Victoria as a gift from his father the King of Alucia. The urn was festooned with delicate ropes of gold around the mouth and the neck.

The Alucian women were attired in dresses of heavy silk worn close to the body, the trains quite long and brought up and fastened with buttons to facilitate walking. Their hair was fashioned into elaborate knots worn at the nape. The Alucian gentlemen wore formal frock coats of black superfine wool that came to midcalf, as well as heavily embroidered waistcoats worn to the hip. It was reported that Crown Prince Sebastian is “rather tall and broad, with a square face and neatly trimmed beard, a full head of hair the color of tea, and eyes the color of moss,” which the discerning reader might think of as a softer shade of green. It is said he possesses a regal air owing chiefly to the many medallions and ribbons he wore befitting his rank.

Honeycutt’s Gazette of Fashion and Domesticity for Ladies

The Right Honorable Justice William Tricklebank, a widower and justice of the Queen’s Bench in Her Majesty’s service, was very nearly blind, his eyesight having steadily eroded into varying and fuzzy shades of gray with age. He could no longer see so much as his hand, which was why his eldest daughter, Miss Eliza Tricklebank, read his papers to him.

Eliza had enlisted the help of Poppy, their housemaid, who was more family than servant, having come to them as an orphaned girl more than twenty years ago. Together, the two of them had anchored strings and ribbons halfway up the walls of his London townhome, and all the judge had to do was follow them with his hand to move from room to room. Among the hazards he faced was a pair of dogs that were far too enthusiastic in their wish to be of some use to him, and a cat who apparently wished him dead, judging by the number of times he put himself in the judge’s path, or leapt into his lap as he sat, or walked across the knitting the judge liked to do while his daughter read to him, or unravelled his ball of yarn without the judge’s notice.

The only other potential impediments to his health were his daughters—Eliza, a spinster, and her younger sister, Hollis, otherwise known as the Widow Honeycutt. They were often together in his home, and when they were, it seemed to him there was quite a lot of laughing at this and shrieking at that. His daughters disputed that they shrieked, and accused him of being old and easily startled. But the judge’s hearing, unlike his eyesight, was quite acute, and those two shrieked with laughter. Often.

At eight-and-twenty, Eliza was unmarried, a fact that had long baffled the judge. There had been an unfortunate and rather infamous misunderstanding with one Mr. Asher Daughton-Cress, who the judge believed was despicable, but that had been ten years ago. Eliza had once been demure and a politely deferential young lady, but she’d shed any pretense of deference when her heart was broken. In the last few years she had emerged vibrant and carefree. He would think such demeanour would recommend her to gentlemen far and wide, but apparently it did not. She’d had only one suitor since her very public scandal, a gentleman some fifteen years older than Eliza. Mr. Norris had faithfully called every day until one day he did not. When the judge had inquired, Eliza had said, “It was not love that compelled him, Pappa. I prefer my life here with you—the work is more agreeable, and I suspect not as many hours as marriage to him would require.”

His youngest, Hollis, had been tragically widowed after only two years of a marriage without issue. While she maintained her own home, she and her delightful wit were a faithful caller to his house at least once a day without fail, and sometimes as much as two or three times per day. He should like to see her remarried, but Hollis insisted she was in no rush to do so. The judge thought she rather preferred her sister’s company to that of a man.

His daughters were thick as thieves, as the saying went, and were coconspirators in something that the judge did not altogether approve of. But he was blind, and they were determined to do what they pleased no matter what he said, so he’d given up trying to talk any practical sense into them.

That questionable activity was the publication of a ladies’ gazette. Tricklebank didn’t think ladies needed a gazette, much less one having to do with frivolous subjects such as fashion, gossip and beauty. But say what he might, his daughters turned a deaf ear to him. They were unfettered in their enthusiasm for this endeavour, and if the two of them could be believed, so was all of London.

The gazette had been established by Hollis’s husband, Sir Percival Honeycutt. Except that Sir Percival had published an entirely different sort of gazette, obviously— one devoted to the latest political and financial news. Now that was a useful publication to the judge’s way of thinking.

Sir Percival’s death was the most tragic of accidents, the result of his carriage sliding off the road into a swollen river during a rain, which also saw the loss of a fine pair of grays. It was a great shock to them all, and the judge had worried about Hollis and her ability to cope with such a loss. But Hollis proved herself an indomitable spirit, and she had turned her grief into efforts to preserve her husband’s name. But as she was a young woman without a man’s education, and could not possibly comprehend the intricacies of politics or financial matters, she had turned the gazette on its head and dedicated it solely to topics that interested women, which naturally would be limited to the latest fashions and the most tantalizing on dits swirling about London’s high society. It was the judge’s impression that women had very little interest in the important matters of the world.

And yet, interestingly, the judge could not deny that Hollis’s version of the gazette was more actively sought than her husband’s had ever been. So much so that Eliza had been pressed into the service of helping her sister prepare her gazette each week. It was curious to Tricklebank that so many members of the Quality were rather desperate to be mentioned among the gazette’s pages.

Today, his daughters were in an unusually high state of excitement, for they had secured the highly sought-after invitations to the Duke of Marlborough’s masquerade ball in honor of the crown prince of Alucia. One would think the world had stopped spinning on its axis and that the heavens had parted and the seas had receded and this veritable God of All Royal Princes had shined his countenance upon London and blessed them all with his presence.

Hogwash.

Everyone knew the prince was here to strike an important trade deal with the English government in the name of King Karl. Alucia was a small European nation with impressive wealth for her size. It was perhaps best known for an ongoing dispute with the neighboring country of Wesloria—the two had a history of war and distrust as fraught as that between England and France.

The judge had read that it was the crown prince who was pushing for modernization in Alucia, and who was the impetus behind the proposed trade agreement. Prince Sebastian envisioned increasing the prosperity of Alucia by trading cotton and iron ore for manufactured goods. But according to the judge’s daughters, that was not the most important part of the trade negotiations. The important part was that the prince was also in search of a marriage bargain.

“It’s what everyone says,” Hollis had insisted to her father over supper recently “And how is it, my dear, that everyone knows what the prince intends?” the judge asked as he stroked the cat, Pris, on his lap. The cat had been named Princess when the family believed it a female. When the houseman Ben discovered that Princess was, in fact, a male, Eliza said it was too late to change the name. So they’d shortened it to Pris. “Did the prince send a letter? Announce it in the Times?”

“Caro says,” Hollis countered, as if that were quite obvious to anyone with half a brain where she got her information. “She knows everything about everyone, Pappa.”

“Aha. If Caro says it, then by all means, it must be true.”

“You must yourself admit she is rarely wrong,” Hollis had said with an indignant sniff.

Caro, or Lady Caroline Hawke, had been a lifelong friend to his daughters, and had been so often underfoot in the Tricklebank house that for many years, it seemed to the judge that he had three daughters.

Caroline was the only sibling of Lord Beckett Hawke and was also his ward. Long ago, a cholera outbreak had swept through London, and both Caro’s mother and his children’s mother had succumbed. Amelia, his wife, and Lady Hawke had been dear friends. They’d sent their children to the Hawke summer estate when Amelia had taken ill. Lady Hawke had insisted on caring for her friend and, well, in the end, they were both lost.

Lord Hawke was an up-and-coming young lord and politician, known for his progressive ideas in the House of Lords. He was rather handsome, Hollis said, a popular figure, and socially in high demand. Which meant that, by association, so was his sister. She, too, was quite comely, which made her presence all the easier to her brother’s many friends, the judge suspected.

But Caroline did seem to know everyone in London, and was constantly calling on the Tricklebank household to spout the gossip she’d gleaned in homes across Mayfair. Here was an industrious young lady—she called on three salons a day if she called on one. The judge supposed her brother scarcely need worry about putting food in their cupboards, for the two of them were dining with this four-and-twenty or that ten-and-six almost every night. It was a wonder Caroline wasn’t a plump little peach.

Perhaps she was. In truth, she was merely another shadow to the judge these days.

“And she was at Windsor and dined with the queen,” Hollis added with superiority.

“You mean Caro was in the same room but one hundred persons away from the queen,” the judge suggested. He knew how these fancy suppers went.

“Well, she was there, Pappa, and she met the Alucians, and she knows a great deal about them now. I am quite determined to discover who the prince intends to offer for and announce it in the gazette before anyone else. Can you imagine? I shall be the talk of London!”

This was precisely what Mr. Tricklebank didn’t like about the gazette. He did not want his daughters to be the talk of London.

But it was not the day for him to make this point, for his daughters were restless, moving about the house with an urgency he was not accustomed to. Today was the day of the Royal Masquerade Ball, and the sound of crisp petticoats and silk rustled around him, and the scent of perfume wafted into his nose when they passed. His daughters were waiting impatiently for Lord Hawke’s brougham to come round and fetch them. Their masks, he was given to understand, had already arrived at the Hawke House, commissioned, Eliza had breathlessly reported, from “Mrs. Cubison herself.”

He did not know who Mrs. Cubison was.

And frankly, he didn’t know how Caro had managed to finagle the invitations to a ball at Kensington Palace for his two daughters—for the good Lord knew the Tricklebanks did not have the necessary connections to achieve such a feat.

He could feel their eagerness, their anxiety in the nervous pitch of their giggling when they spoke to each other. Even Poppy seemed nervous. He supposed this was to be the ball by which all other balls in the history of mankind would forever be judged, but he was quite thankful he was too blind to attend.

When the knock at the door came, he was startled by such squealing and furious activity rushing by him that he could only surmise that the brougham had arrived and the time had come to go to the ball.
